Hey geeks , im in a bit of a dilema... i am a mobile hairdresser and have a good clientele, a new salon has opened near me and ive put in to rent a chair 3 days a week . just so i have more of a base and maybe gain a few more clients.
Am i right in saying that on my days i am there i HAVE to stay there on the opening times as i am the only one in on that day?? Bearing in mind i am self employed and am paying them my rent?
I also have asked if i can carry out my lashes there on the days im in and i can but per set i need to pay them a percentage, so im paying for the chair even tho im doing lashes..
im just a little lost with all of this renting at the moment

I sure cant be expected to sit around and hope for new clients to come in???

it depends, my chair renters come and go as they wish, but some salons will want u there open til close, what does it say in your contract? Also if u are wanting to gain new salon clients im affraid you HAVE to sit there and wait for walk-ins, phone to ring etc, you cant just go because you havent got anyone booked in! also i think its fair to ask for a percentage of your lashes, just make sure the salon has insurance to carry out lash treatments! hth x

thanks for your reply, i dont as yet have a contract from them, i have my own personal insurance that covers me for hair and beauty treatments but unsure about the salon
xxx

i dont agree with the taking a percentage of ur lashes at all. . . ur renting a space in the salon to carry out ur business. . . if ur business is hair and lashes its hair and lashes. . .
also if ur self employed u shud be able to come and go as u please. . they cant make u stay, that to me is what you can ask emplyees to do, not renters. . . x

Would you be using the same chair as what you are paying rent on to do lashes or would you need a different space? X

I can come and go as I plz but you are paying for a full 3 day rent and if your not there your still paying the for the full day so it makes sense to be there but it should be up to you!! And unless your using a different space and/or if they are buying them in they shouldn't ask for a percentage!! But I have found renting a chair and doing mobile fantastic hope it works out for you xxxx

thanks for your replies...

I will need a space for the bed for the lashes, but i cant seem to get my head around that im paying rent on the 3 days im here and if i do lashes in say 3 of the hours im there i owe them more I am fully self employed and buy all my own products and they are all my own mobile clients that i have brought in up to now.I will be doing a loss at first as the people ive brought in are my mobile anyway
Even when i just do a 30min top up they are asking for 20 percent
Its only been open a week though.
For instance im in the salon on my own for 2 days (only stylist ) and salon is open for 10 hours and they said if i cant stay the whole day to let them know as 1 stylist has to be there :o

From a salon owners point of view I would say a lot depends on how you manage your business as a chair renter.

If you are making your own bookings (away from the salon) presumably by advertising your mobile number then I would say you could be free to come and go as you please but your not going to pick up any passing trade this way. Being open one minute, then closed the next will do your business no good whatsoever. However, if you are using the salons receptionist to book clients in (including walk in's) then I feel you should be around otherwise how can you/they manage the business. If you decide to shoot off for the afternoon because you are slow and somebody comes in, it really doesn't look professional for the receptionist to say I'm sorry she's left for the afternoon. You also need to consider that if bookings are made via the receptionist then they are presumably making bookings on your behalf when your not in, this would have been taken into account regarding your rent.

Being self-employed and renting does allow you flexibility but it has to work for you and the salon owners and yes salon owners cannot stipulate when you should work but the idea of you wanting to rent is presumably to make money.

Salon owners can't just shut the doors and have the afternoon off because it isn't busy.

If your mobile, then it is a different scenario completely as you do not have a shop that people pass regularly.

Shop premises need to be open and unfortunately until you are successful you may have to sit around and wait.

Regarding the lashes, this is totally different to hair, for which you are renting a chair and space around that chair. If your lashes need another room and space then this equates to extra money I'm afraid. Renting is all about space for which there is a rate.

Could you not go back to the owner and negotiate a better percentage for the lashes or play a flat rate as in the chair rental?

We'll be looking to rent our chairs out in our salon, and we would like/expect the chair renters to stay for the full day.

Although you are self employed, you are still representing the salon and its image, also, at least if there are a few members of staff about and its quiet, the salon looks like theres a bit of a buzz going on. And if you are stuck sat around, you can always get a "free" style from another member if they're not busy or practice your skills on another member in there. HTH :|

Think of it this way. If you are there on your own, you get all clients coming in. Alternatively they could employ someone to work with you then you'd need to half the clients between you.

As for lashes.... The salon need to have a chair free all day for you and a bed or space for a bed free for you all day in case you have lashes in. So yes you should have to pay more cos they could have someone in paying for hair and someone in paying for lashes rent.

I have a chair renter and I ask her to stay the full day on days I take off. If she doesn't wanna do that then fine, I'll employ someone but then they get priority on clients. Up to her if building her client base is more important or getting away at 4 instead of 6.

Having gone full circle from working in a salon, going mobile, then owning a small salon to a large one I have seen this so many times and communication is the key

I am afraid to say that if I rent a chair out, as I did in my smaller salon, I expect the renter to be there all day regardless as everyone has already said on here, it doesnt look professional to be in and out and you will miss the trade.

You are paying for the chair that is within a building that costs money to heat/light/open up.

If you want to come and go as you please, do it all by percentage and make your own bookings but walk-ins wont be yours to take.

Same with the lashes, if you want space, you have to pay for it.

I have a Nail Tech that is leaving next month because she does not want to "sit around and wait for clients" but that is what has to be done when you are gaining new clients as we have lost many that come in when she isnt here and they move onto the next nail bar so I am opting to PAYE my next technician, you could find yourself losing your chair to a PAYE staff member just for the ease of it to the salon owner.

However, you should not be asked to open and close the salon.
