Skin is composed of two layers, a surface epithelium, known as the epidermis, and a deeper connective tissue, known as the dermis. The epidermis is composed of five layers of cells, of which the two deepest layers (the stratum basale and stratum spinosum) have the capability of undergoing mitosis and forming more cells. If you cut a piece of skin out (both epidermis and dermis) the cells of the stratum basale around the cut edges undergo very rapid mitosis and form an epithelial layer on the surface of the wound, composed of a single layer of cells. Then this single layer of cells will, in time, reform the original thickness (all five layers of the epidermis), so that the wound is healed. If you burn the skin of the finger deeply enough, or if you remove both the dermis and epidermis from the finger tip then the fingerprints will not regenerate.

Can all posters bear in mind that we are not here to do the homework for those studying but to help point them in the right direction.

Jellytot - what info were you given by your college about the layers of skin?

I understand your concern jellytot and in my opinion your college should provide you with some details on where to look for the info or what literature is available for you to read. If they dont provide you with any help then what is the point in you going to them. Did you try googling the info you were after.

I apologise if my reply came across as harsh but I hope you can see my point of view.

I see that you are new to the site and so welcome. However,as a moderator of the site I have to point out that in general we do not answer people's assignment work, but point them in the direction of where to find the answers. This not only helps them learn better, but also stops the board being clogged up with thousands of students asking for help with their assignments. Theresa, as a more experienced used of the site, was merely pointing out that this is not how we work here, and was nothing to do with her nerves !
