Hi, I have just had a client on the phone - I am doing her hair tomorrow night. She was saying that she once had something done like highlights, pulled through a cap - it has a name but she can't think what, she said a wash or a tint....but it wasn't permanent and it slowly faded out but it was definitely lighter. Any ideas? She said she wouldn't mind going a few shades lighter but doesn't want an obvious regrowth so this *non permanent blonde* was ideal.

Now if I am correct, anything that lightens your hair is going to be permanent. So I can't see how I can take it a few shades lighter from being a dirty blonde and it washing out? Help please!

I was thinking it might be Wella Sunlights, but that's fairly subtle isn't it? Anyway I don't carry that (mobile) so it will have to be in the Wella KP range, probably in the 10 line.

hey, yes anything lighter is permanent!!! she was probably told is was a semi, what is her base shade? x

Thanks for that, I started to think I was going mad and forgetting the basics! I'm not sure of her base as I haven't done her hair before, she was booked n for a cut and blowdry but phoned last night to ask about colour. She has said she's a dirty blonde so I am guessing around a 7 or an 8.

ok cool, depending how light she wants to go, i would take a 10 (whichever one u choose) and 9% and also take some hi/lift and 12% with u incase she wants it that little bit lighter! hth x

That's what I was thinking, although hadn't thought of using 9% tbh - will have that too.

I'll talk to her and try and find out what the other hairdresser did - she's adamant that it faded out though! Weird. Thanks for your help x

hey, u will need 9% to get up to 3 levels of lift, maybe the tone faded and the blonde just dulled down as it grew out (atmosphere and all that!) also if she had it done with a cap they would have been fairly fine strands! xx

Just to update you. I used 10/1 and 9% and a few 12/1 12% framing the face in fairly fine weaves. It looked lovely and probably what she had done before. I think next time she will want it lighter so will just use the 12/1.

I still don't know what she was on about really, she kept saying 'is it called a wash' apparently that's what the other hairdresser was calling it and saying it was very old school. So no idea! But she's happy with the colour, so thanks for your help!

no worries, im glad u and your client liked it! theres no such thing as a lighter wash!!! xx

Hey my hairdressers do something called a toner! It's basically a permanent colour say a 10 with 9% and it's applied at the backwash after the first wash. it basically lightens the root a little and can be used after highlights to bring the colours closer together! Alot of clients get it in between their high light appointments to make roots less obvious! It
Does fade out and isn't permanent hth x

I'm confused, I don't understand how putting a permanent 10 on with 9% can be non permanent? x

Not sure of the technical bits as I'm a beauty therapist! Lol but by adding water aren't you making it a semi? I have this done to my hair all the time so I can say it does work! Xx

No, adding water lowers the peroxide strength, but I don't think it would never make it a semi. x

Maybe it lowers it just enough to slightly lighten the roots and darken the highlights but will fade on the highlights over time?? Like I said i don't know the tech bit! But when I read the original question that's the procedure that sprung to mind! Xx

sorry but never heard anything like it, sounds completely pointless, i bet it doesnt look great either!

Think Wella used to do a milkshake that had similar results! Actually looks fab stops the whole severe blonde streak look and makes it more natural. And it's a saviour for my hair as I keep it light and if I was constantly bleaching and permanent colouring I doubt I'd have much hair left! It's obviously down to stylists choice and preference. Don't knock it till you've tried it! Xx

Isn't that called breaking the base? Basically lightens the roots a touch to blend in with the regrowth rather than having the highlights done again. A toner is a semi permanent colour put over highlights to tone and unwanted warmth etc.

My client definitely didn't have that done, but thanks for the suggestion.
