Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if you could help, i need some advice. I am qualified at nvq2 level, i qualifed 4 years ago. When i qualified the salon shut, i didnt apply for another salon job as i didnt have the confidence and had just qualified. I really want to get back into hairdressing and work in a salon but need more experience. I went on a refresher course but wasnt that great. I still do hair on the side cutting and colouring. I want to apply for a job in a salon but to be honest dont know how good i am anymore. As i have little salon experience being a qualified stylist. I didnt know whether to try and find more courses to go on or apply for jobs, tell them my situation and apply for a junior position? Any suggestions on what to do would be greatly appreciated:biggrin:

If it was me I would apply for all jobs (not senior stylist tho) and jus tell them ur situation and then let the salon decide of they can help you. Even if u only get a job for 6 months. I left my first salon with little experience and got a job covering maternity and was thrown in at the deep end. I still ask other stylist for help on colours as it's not my strong point but they ask for my advice on put ups.

So there will always be someone round to help.

Why not see if u can volunteer one day a week to get u bk in to how a salon works again.

Hope this helps

Yes thats great thankyou:biggrin: Think i might try and apply for jobs see what happens. Its more my cuts really, struggle with a few of them n wouldnt feel confident with them. Maybe they could help with that im not sure. Thanks again for your help xx

what about doing an updated cutting course ? i had been out of hairdressing for a fair amount of yrs and went on a cutting course and even though it did recover a few basic cuts they showed us a lot of dsifferent stuff , you wnt fail to learn something new , have a look at your wholesalers or go to a loreal ,. wella school they do day courses xx

Hiya,
I was in the same situation a few years ago and i tried a refresher course that also wasnt brilliant!
I went for a stylist position and luckily enough the owner of the salon was a part time assesor at a local college which really helped me because she had the teaching skills. I got the job and worked there for 2 years and can honestly say i wouldnt be where i was without all the things she taught me. Alot of salon owners/managers now a days will be trained assesors aswel and i think thats the best way you can go, have a look around or see if you know anybody that knows of a salon with an in house assesor...you've got the basic training which will come back to you in no time now you just need the right people to show you different techniques and skills and you will build up your confidence in no time! And be getting payed a stylists wage not an apprentice wage! Hope this helps a bit! Ally xx

This has all been so much help, thankyou!:) Im so nervous about applying for salon jobs as i have not been in one for so long, just need to go for it, and build up my confidence again. Hopefully a salon will take me on:biggrin: thankyou for your help. xx
