So after six months of being at a new salon I've seen lots of old staff leave, new staff come and even some of those leave, and now we had a massive bomb shell telling us she is closing the salon on Monday's as from two weeks. So basically I'm meant to some how survive on 33 hours a week!! I don't know what to do for the best as I've already been told their is no hours spare any other days, my brain and heart say look for another salon. What would you do?

sorry to hear about you getting your hours cut, i know what that feels like!

do you enjoy working in the salon you are in? why dont you see if you can start up mobile on the days your not working to make up your income?
if your not happy in the salon for any other reason than your hours being cut then maybe look for a new job, but there's always the risk any other salon will cut hours at some point too, or even shut altogether. isn't 33 hours better than no job?

If I'm honest, no I don't and I could kind of deal with it before though but now ive just hit a wall so to speak, and yes 33 hours is better than nothing but I've still somehow got to pay mortgage and live :s mobile is a good idea actually it kind of went through my head but not properly, thanks for your help and advice :) x

if your really not happy where you work, I would look for another job, it is a risk when you have a mortgage to pay, but it's also important to be happy in your job, especially when you are there 33 hours a week! if you think you would like to start mobile, maybe you could stay on just now, until you can build up a client base, you never know, one day you might be the one choosing to drop your hours at the salon to fit in your own clients!

the other option, if you can't find another salon job, or you decide not to go mobile, you could always look for another part time job to top up your wages?

good luck, I would love to hear what you decide to do x

Is there anyway you/they would consider you being self-employed on Mondays and you opening and closing the salon, this way your existing clients can use you on these days?

quick question just because I'm curious about something based on my own experiences....is the high turnover of staff something to do with whether people are happy or not in the job? It sounds like a lot of people have come and gone in just 6 months? maybe this is something that is also (whether you know it or not) affecting how you feel about the job. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

it's a tough one because for some people 33 hours would feel like a nice ammount of hours to be doing but everyone's circumstances are different so i suppose it'd be worth doing the math and working out what's best. If it was me, I would be pleased to have the time off if I wasn't enjoying the job that much and would look at ways to save money and see how I could live then.

i guess no matter what you do, it'll be a tough decision but I'd go with your instinct. I think if i really needed more hours I would keep an eye open for another job at the very least.

Unfortunately the owner won't do self employed even for one day, and yes high turnover of staff is because the owner is young and inexperienced at dealing with people and staff, even though she has had the salon for 4 years. In the last 6 months 19 people have worked there and only 4 have not left the rest have been replaced to leave 11 staff working there now!! It's a hair and beauty salon

Omg, she cant be a very good employer, how can someone go through that many staff? I can even find 1 stylist!! X

Not the sharpest tool in the box but she didn't even hire me which is the funniest thing the manager of hair hired me and now she has left!! Lol x

Well I've just been made redundant....so I don't think I have much choice lol new job here I come!

I wish you all the best. Sounds like you are best off free to find a good salon which will be more secure, and better run.

Reading between the lines it sounds like the salon had financial problems. Quite often when there is a high staff turnover, it's because the owner is desperately looking for that "uberstylist" that can rake it in from day one. Rather than giving a stylist the time to develop a client base, they sack anyone who is not bringing in money from day dot, or make it so uncomfortable that they leave.

It may not feel like it today, but this could be a blessing in disguise.

good luck looking for a new job, let us know how you are getting on! and maybe even look into self employed? x
