Hi geek
I was contacted today by a high school who are in the process of setting up a teaching hair and beauty salon within the school for s4-s6 pupils and they are looking for trainers. I'm really interested in this would like advice on how to become a teacher. I've been in hairdressing for over 20years and have certificates for svq 2 & 3 but not HNC. Will this be a problem or will my experience cover it?

I've looked into this also and as far as I am aware you need to be at least level 3 NVQ qualified. For teaching you then go through the CTTLS, PTTLS, and DTTLS qualifications (depending on the level you want to teach). To be an assessor you need to also have qualifications with an A1 award, from there you can do an IV course x

Do you need the CTTLS, PTTLS AND DTTLS before you can teach or can you take these concurrently with teaching? Also what are these?

What do you think the cost of setting the kind of venture up be?

Unfortunately I am unsure of the cost but yes to teach, you will need some form of teaching qualification (PTTLS, CTTLS or DTTLS). Which level you require will depend on the teaching size and setting. I only looked into this briefly as this was the reason i undertook my level 3 (I own my own salon but chose to do this so as i can work towards teaching later in life). Perhaps you could ask a college or careers advisor for more precise info x

Preparing to teach in the life long diploma to teach in the life long sector / cert ed as it was called or going back to being called .... !!!
PTLLS course is 12-20 weeks ...
DTLLS - 2 yrs ( 3 - 5 hrs per week)

A1 / Taqa - is the assessors qualification to enable you to assess students through NVQs / VRQ's ..

Wether you need them to start is up to the Sch / but you would need to do them once in that role ... !!!

I'm in Scotland so funny feeling it's different up here?
