Hi,

At the moment I have light/medium brown hair that's slightly reddy (this is my natural colour I haven't dyed it) and I really wanted it go a sort of caramelly mix of blonde and light brown (photo underneath)

I'm not a professional and my knowledge of lightening hair is not very good so I was hoping someone can please help I would be really grateful

Would I need a toner/ what products would you recommend? How do I slightly lighten hair, do I just use a low volume developer?

Oh ok :( thanks for letting me know. Didn't know you had to be a hairdresser/professional to ask sorry

I'm actually getting highlights done at my hair salon but my hairdresser advised I do the basic overall caramel tone before hand by myself to save money which was nice of her. I'll just stick to box dye then haha

Wow really? She advised you to colour your own hair? Why couldnt she get it like that before highlighting? I cant even fathom why

I don't know any hairdresser that would suggest this!

I think you should maybe find a new hairdresser.

Also when your saving on money for your hair you will sacrifise the quality! you can't get both x

Yer I think it's probably because I'm quite a loyal costumer and also introduced my sisters and mum to the salon so she wants to save me a bit of money so just recommend I do half of it myself. But I'm just scared of lightening my hair. I might just go and get it all done by her if I can't work out how to get the colour I want

That's not doing you a favour, doing you a favour would be to put colour do the colour for you, just for the price of the highlights! X

Yer that would be amazing but surprisingly half head highlights are £80 and the colour beforehand would be an extra £40. I found the pricing confusing but this might be normal pricing for professional colouring I'm not sure? I know she'll do highlights well though so really want to get them done by her

My advise to you, if your willing to pay £80 to have your hair highlighted, don't put colour on it yourself! Just have the highlights on there own x

Is the caramel colour you want a blonde or brown tone?

Your hairdresser sounds very unprofessional suggesting you colour it yourself with a box dye, before she highlights it. For one thing, the highlighted hair will have been processed twice. That's not good for the condition of your hair.

I wonder if she isn't very confident about producing the results you're after?

From what inam now it's about 2 levels lighter to a 6/7 with highlights (hope that makes sense). The caramel colour is more on the very light brown side I think. But i actually decided I'm going to get it all done at the hairdresser, don't want to risk anything

It's a colour specialist salon so hoping it'ss all going to be ok. Is there anything you suggest I should say when explaining what I want so she will understand? Is there a specific technical name for the really subtle highlights in the picture? Would be grateful if you had any advice :)

A good colourist should be able to work out exactly what you want during the consultation by asking lots of questions and listening carefully to your replies.

During the consultation, I usually show clients pictures of styles and colour swatches to ensure I understand what their version of 'caramel' is.

If you already have strong ideas of what you want, definitely take along some pictures as a starting point.
