Hi Everyone,

I hope i'm on the right section of this forum.

I have been wanting to change careers for some time now. I have worked as a qualified accountant for over 7 years and i have lost my enthusiasm for it. I have always been interested in Beauty Therapy from an early age and i now feel it is the time for me to take it more seriously. I have no Beauty experience at all, however, i am hardworking, friendly and definitely a people's person.

I have been looking at studying a part time course at the Beauty Academy for NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy. Would this be the right course for me? I have also put an ad on Gumtree.com to advertise myself for Saturday work at a Beauty Salon in order to get some hands on experience. I will still need to work Mon-Fri so any free time i have will be evenings and weekends. My aim is to qualify, gain experience and work for myself. I guess i am just after some advice from any Beauty Professionals to see what is the best route to take in the industry.

Thanks in advance
Claire

Hi Claire
Sounds like you're making all the right moves already! well done you!
NVQ Level 2&3 is where I started. You need all the proper qualifications to progress in this industry. Saturday work is also a great place to start, you could even offer yourself on a saturday for free, this is what I did and gained so much confidence and experience. The route you have chosen so far is great.
Keep us posted as to how youre getting on :D

Course standards vary greatly and really it's just about how good the tutor is.

I would always say it's better to do a course in person with the trainer where you get the most hands on experience, rather than distance learning/online. If you do private college courses always check the course you do will be covered by insurance.

Here's a couple of websites that might be interesting. Sorry if I'm just repeating what you already know.

CIBTAC education organisation offering qualifications in health and beauty

ITEC ITEC

BABTAC membership organisation offering insurance policies

Also contact some spas and salons directly asking if you can go in for a day for work experience, or go and get some treatments done and chat openly with the therapists.

I continued to work full time and studied at local college NVQ 2 & 3 on an evening course. I did a day course with the Beauty Academy a couple of years ago and it was fine but others I spoke to on the day said it was very hit and miss depending which tutor you got.

You could always ring a few beauty salons in your area and ask them if they would offer you work experience? I rang a few in my area just to see if I could get work experience whilst studying for a NVQ either distance learning or at college and 2 salons said yes! As the saying goes you don't ask you don't get :) x

I am new to this site so just trying to make my profile . thanks for info. Xx

Hello, you sound like me, I was in your position too and I am glad I took the plunge!

I had worked for a well known Building Society for 7 years before leaving and going to work in a beautiful stately home spa! I have since worked in a small rural salon, worked for myself as a mobile therapist and I am in the process of building a super duper makeup kit to specialise in Bridal makeup.

It is a great industry to be in, there is lots if variety and different environments and areas you can specialise in.

I studied NVQ level 2 in the evenings whilst I still did my 'day job' at the Building Society, then I went part time at my job and studied NVQ level 3. Before I got to leave there altogether.

I also did Virgin Vie whilst still at my old job, and mobile bridal makeup. (Yes, I was knackered!! Ha ha! But a young enough to somehow have the stamina back then!)

The only thing I miss about my old job is the money as very few people get rich doing beauty! But it certainly is enjoyable.

In my experience it is essential to have NVQ levels 2 and 3 to get the best jobs.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Clair x
How is Ur level 2 going have u completed it and how did u find it?
Have u got any jobs at beauty salons yet also how did u advertise urself?
Many salons don't take on unless u r level3 qualified.
I rang a few but they were not interested.
