Hi i'm wondering about the cost of insurance for working from home? I am just starting out doing gel polish manicures. I started with friends and family, then I did a course and got a diploma in gel polish application. The only reason why I haven't got insurance yet is because my client base is so small and I couldn't really afford it. Any advice would be very welcome thank you.

Hiya, insurance really isn't expensive especially when you compare it against a potential law suit against you.

We're not necessarily talking about you doing something wrong...if they trip up and break a leg you never know if they will try and make a claim.

You're probably talking less than £100 and really need it even if you have one client.

Also, check that your home insurance is still valid if you work from home as we were originally with a company that didn't allow it so we had to change.

Hope that helps

If you are working from home your house insurance needs to change as having a business from home increases your risks of claiming. You need this on top of regular beauty insurance, beauty insurance is usually under £100. Buildings insurance varies. Mine doubled when I added on my home salon x

Even if I'm just working from my living room? Its not quite a salon!

Yes, I use my spare room. If people are coming in your home it's a higher risk of claims, damage, and obviously they see what things you have in your home. If you ever needed to claim for anything your insurance wouldn't pay out if they found out you hadn't told them about working from home.

OK. I really must look into this. Does insurance last for a year at a time?

Yes, babtac and the guild and salon gold are good for public liability insurance for your business. And balens and towergate were the only ones I could get to insure my home with.

i took out a policy just yesterday with salon gold, it was £55 for the year and it is for beauty therapy, nail tech and makeup artist cover x

I pay £59 for public liability insurance it covers me for in home and mobile services. Not all home insurance companies will charge you extra for running a business at home, but they may not cover you for theft as you invited a client into your home. It is worth shopping around.
