I have just been reading through my PN magazine and at the back there is an advert and part of the advert is as follows:

Two bottles of monomer:
1. Acrylic liquid monomer (No MMA) *purple bottle with pink and green label is the no mma bottle.

2. Acrylic liquid monomer

Does this mean that monomer 2 contains MMA?

Surely our magazines have a responsibility not to allow companies to advertise if they are knowingly selling MMA based monomers.

I know the mags depend on the advertisers for a lot of their revenues but surely there should be limits. Would you see an advert for an abatoire in a vegetarian society magazine LOL.

Hi there,

Might sound very thick, but what is MMA?

Its cheap monomer thats unsafe to use on the nails it can cause the nail plate to lift off the nail bed and more, and its really hard to soak off and file! EMA is the safe one and is more expensive Angie xx

God!
I was trained at college and this was NEVER mentioned!Surely trained tutors have an obligation to point this out to students?! I was totally unaware.

I have just checked my monomer and it doesn't say which it is, I use Salon System's Profile Acrylic Liquid Monomer, How do we know what we are buying?

Sorry about all of the questions I had no idea there were diferent kinds and obviously want to use EMA as it is the safest option for my clients (If I want to keep them!!)

I am hoping to do a CND conversion course very soon and then I will be using Creative products so know there will be no problems there.

if you do a search there have been alot of topics on mma (methyl methacrylate) this causes severe allergic reactions and damage to the nail plate.
it is a cheap monomer and banned in the u.s. and here in the uk there have been petitions trying to ban it here
your monomer bottle should list its ingredients and one of them being ethyl methacrylate.
like i said do a search of MMA
and you will get all the info on it

In the ingredients it should say Ethyl Methacrylate, but l'm sure salon systems is fine, l'm using star nails at the mo, but am also hoping to do a CND conversion soon, Angie xx

Just checked and it does say Ethyl Methacrylate in the ingredients Phew! Will definately watch out for that in the future!, Thanx guys

Hiya,

mma is used worldwide in the dental industry!! Herman is a dental technician and uses mma daily, the odour is really really bad and he moulds big balls of the stuff in his hands daily (its mixed with polymer).

Not safe to use on nails tho!! the damage can be really bad when used on nails.
