Hi all

Just need abit of advice

I work for a salon on a commission
30% of my profits go to the salon owner
Or I potentially could pay the £40 day rate if my 30% profits exceed £40

Is it fair for the salon owner to still take 30% commission off my deposits paid by the client, if the client has not shown up. I haven’t used the facilities or the chair. So I don’t see how this is fair.

please educate me if iam wrong

Yes, a commission split agreement applies to all your turnover, whether you take it as prepayments or as charges for services provided on the day.

An example

Your client books an £100 service and pays you £25 as a deposit. You keep the money and the client turns up and pays you the balance of £75. You owe the salon owner £30 (£30% of £100). If you didn’t pay her a percentage of the deposit you have to pay her that £30 out of the £75 the client pays you on the day. It’s going to be tricky to calculate because you can’t do it as a percentage of the money in the till, you have to add back the deposit.

Assuming you take a mixture of deposits and balancing payments every day, it’s going to be complicated if you first separate out that day’s deposit payments and put these to one side and then add back the deposits previously taken and calculate. It’s complicated just writing it out!

Much easier surely to just add up the days takings and hand over 30%.

You need to ask the salon owner to refund her share of a deposit if you make a refund - where the client cancels in good time. This won’t happen very often.

If the client doesn’t show up - then both you and the salon owner are out of pocket. You haven’t incurred any costs on her non existent treatment - she on the other hand has bills to pay whether your client shows up or not. She still has to pay rent, heat and light, broadband and insurance and her other costs don’t get any smaller just because you twiddled your thumbs for an hour or two.

This seems wrong. It is too bad salon owners are so greedy! I guess the ownes sees it as income from the salon unfortunately there is no official union or protection advocate for us which leaves us at the mercy of these greedy selfish owners!
