I was always so hesitant of bleaching my hair, the way people would talk about it made it sound like it would melt my hair.
Now my hair is very thick to begin with, there is lots of it but it is also thick in diameter. It is also very healthy, silky and strong (never get noticeable split ends) so I am aware that this is probably the reason bleach isn't as damaging. I have had my hair bleached 6 times, and it is still in great condition.
Yes I find bleach dries my hair out, but I feel as though semi permanent colors restore my hair back to their original condition.
Nevertheless, every time I ask to get my hair lightened at salons, they always advise me that bleach is super drying and that they will avoid using it if they have to. They tend to insist that they can lighten it without bleach. It is kind of frustrating to hear this, I would think that they would have enough experience to know that everybody's hair is different and some hair types can tolerate bleach a lot more than other types.
