I've had a bad spray tan, need some advice

Hi everyone,

This is my first post. I'am not a beautician but I stumbled across this website because I noticed there are lots of you that are qualified enough to give good advice and have experience.

I went for my first every spray tan today and it was awful. I did everything that I should before a spray tan, exfoliate, wear loose clothes etc. When I got into the tent I was standing in about 1cm worth of fake tan from other customers. I trusted this woman so thought it would be okey but was suprised I wasnt standing on a towel. The whole process took about a minute and she didnt ask me to lift my breasts up or anything.

Afterwards I was dried off with a hairdryer for a few mintues.

I have got home and I look like david Dickenson and where my breasts sit slightly higher in a bra there is a massive white mark which she has missed. The bottoms of my feet look horrendous and its all over my nails.

I was supposed to go food shopping afterwards but had to come home and rush into the house before the neighbours saw me. I can't express enough how awful I looked.

Any thoughts? What should she have done or is it always like this?

I wish I had spoken up but im rubbish at confrontation and dont have much confidence.

Hi, do you know what brand was used?

how long ago was the tan done? Did you wash it off as soon as you got home or have you still got it on your skin?

You definitely shouldn't of been dried off with a hair dryer lol

did the lady use barrier cream on your skin? did she not clean your nails with a wipe afterwards? x

She didnt use any sort of barrier cream or any wipes before or after. She also didnt ask me any health, skin type or medication questions. I washed it off after about an hour. Most of it has come off but it looks a bit patchy. The bottoms of my feet look horrendous.

She used tantrick. Also her bulb had blown in her treatment room so had to spray me with the curtains open or there wouldnt have been any light to see what she was doing.

Hey my advice is if the tan is patchy ( areas missed ) and the soles of your feet are very dark then it's best if u wash it over before it sets and exfoliate as once you let it set and wash it off and then try and get your tan of it would be a nightmare as you should not exfoliate your skin at least 4-5 days after being sprayed as it could make it very patchy as you can't get it off easy. I would advice you to wash it off only of it hasn't been longer than about 3-4 hours depending on the tan used . X

I see you did wash it off straight away, if you scrub your feet and around nails should come off without any problems, it's very unprofessional how she sprayed you, she should have applied barrier cream and wiped over your nails for u xx

dont let it put off as once you have a good spray tan you will be addicted!!!

you should have had sticky feet to put on to stop your feet getting tanned and there should be no residue from previous clients and no you shoud not have been dried with a hairdryer!! id give the salon a call and say that you are not happy even if you dont want to go back just so that they know!

Don't let it put you off, not everyone gives a service like you have just recieved.

If you say what area your in some of the girls on here may be in the same area as you & hook you up with a decent tan. xx

I think first off you need to contact the person who tanned you and tell her what the problem is and ask her to rectify it or refund you your money, I can't believe she tanned you with the curtains open

I totally agree with you lush-lash, it's a shame some people do treatments this way but there are so many of us out there who still take care and time with what they offer. I highly recommend a sienna x tan they are great ! I have worked with st tropez, fake bake and califorinia tan and out of all I prefe sienna

OMG, that's awful. You should have had a full consultaton prior to the tan and asked what colour you wanted to achieve. Barrier cream should have been applied to your hands, feet, knees etc, sticky feet, hair net and a CLEAN towel down and adequate booth to stand in. and drying you off with a hairdryer?? bet that wasn't electrically tested, she could have injured you. I would check if she is qualified, insured etc and definately phone the salon owner to express your concerns. Getting a tan should be a lovely experience, you should have walked away from your appointment feeling and looking great. If I was nearer to you and offer you a free tan to show you what a decent one is actually like (not that I claim to be brilliant but I have had no complaints yet and lots of repeat custom). Don't let it put you off, find someone reputable, ask around and see who has had a good spray tan in your area, good luck xx

Hey ivefudn the best way to get the tan off your feet is to use a foot file its takes off quite alot of tan. Just put abit of soap on the foot file and scrub away on the plus you get supersoft feet lol hope it helps!! x

So sorry to hear you had a bad experience. The girls are right though. If you find a good technician you'll be a fan for life. It upsets me to hear so many similar stories from customers out there who have been put off and call me after seeing a friend or family member with a fabulous tan. I have "converted" a few now LOL. If I was closer I would tan you FOC too. Don't give up and now you know what you ought to get on the next tan so if you find another "cowboy" you will recognise straight away that there is something amiss. Let us know how you get on and post a pic of your new fabulous tan
