lets debate.....

What do you class as junior stylist?

I class it as completion of level 2. Just because some ppl still have so much to learn and many have very basic skills that I have come across and lack client confidence.

What do you think? I would love to hear everyone's opinions :)

I was a junior stylist when I was un-qualified working in a salon on an apprenticeship , I qualified then moved to stylist, and senior stylist two years after that :)

definitely junior stylist after completing nvql2.

ive had 3 in salon and none could be left alone other than on basic cuts and some root tints....had 1 that demanded full time stylist job when she had part time junior job, i said no as last 5 clients had commented she was lovely but slow and too timid.

she left and a year on still works in a retail shop as each trial feedback same result "not enough experience".

silly girl she could have prgressed here but now she is out of the game and 60 salons in town say the same :(

I'd say junior stylist is someone with maybe a level 2 from college and no experience in a salon yet or someone still learning level 2 in a salon. Not too sure how employers view it though would love to know as I've only done level 2 so far but have completed it in 14 months and had 3 years salon exp including that 14 months training so am I junior stylist or stylist??? :) xx

Eee that's a shame! Don't know whether its because I was 22(almost 23)when I started, and don't want to sound cock sure but I done so much better than the other younger ones I was learning with and even kept up with a couple of the fully qualified stylists in my salon :o I absolutely loved learning and wanted to do everything better than anyone else and wanted to do it all now too lol. I must of been a nightmare!!! Xx

I think it depends! I was the same as bluerinse done my hairdressing as a junior stylist on an apprenticeship so you work on the shop floor much quicker & gain better experience & move up the ladder quickly! however someone who has done full-time college with no real salon experience can surely only expect to be a junior stylist until they are up to scratch??

Least i'm not alone in thinking juniors are after completing level 2. I understand about the aps but still you don't have loads of client experience, just passing up etc, doing the odd colour etc etc...

When I trained you were a first second & then third year junior I went to college too but you learn far more in a salon & quicker you're definately not a stylist at level 2 :)

It definitely does depend on your training, I'm only nvq2 but I did an apprenticeship like I said earlier and I had 5 stylists training me every single day for 2 years whilst I was at college and these stylists trained me before I went to college for 3 years, By the time I went to college I could blow-dry, apply toners and colours. When I left this salon I was senior stylist classed as level 3 without the paperwork though. It's definitely down to the training people have I think.

in general you are a junior or apprentice until you get your level 2. Then junior stylist until you have consistantly proven you can work at commercial speed and accuracy. Then stylist until you consistantly earn a certain amount for the salon, or other such criteria, then senior stylist. Normally it takes around 7 years to reach senior stylist, but there are stars who make it much faster. I think that it is usually down to the talent and work ethic of the individual rather than the name of the training school or trainer.

I think that you are a junior until you have completed level 2 - where I trained they preferred the term 'trainee stylist' (it's a very up Market well respected and very busy salon). I just don't think the level 2 guys know enough to be entirely confident with everything on their own at that stage! Even after my level 3 although I had been on the salon floor full time since completing level 2 I still wasn't 110% fine on my own.

I reckon its improver after level 3 as you have all this knowledge u just need the experience to gain confidence. I think every trainee is different though so think it may depend on the employer?

Agreed! I worked so hard as an apprentice! I picked things up really easily & I was working the salon floor after about 4 months mixing & applying colour blowdrying etc along with all my other duties, I earned a rubbish amount of money probably about £45 a week!!! (4 full days plus 1 day college) so yep! Definitely my work ethic that got me through
I honestly say I wouldn't change a thing about my route into the industry! Little bit of luck & alot of hard work :)
