Hi all,

I've just qualified in NVQ 2. I have been working in a salon since September, sweeping up, washing hair, neutralising and making appointments. I really enjoy it but now I really want to be doing more:)
I'm late 30s. All the girls I work with are a little older than me and they say that when they trained you didn't cut any hair for 3 years!!
Anyway I only work 2 days a week and my boss isn't there on these days. The apprentice has just left because she felt she wasn't improving and wasn't being trained. I'm thinking that maybe I would get on better in another salon. I just really want to learn and I'm worried that i will forget what I've learnt if I'm not doing anything.:green:

So I really want to ask some salon owners how should I go about finding a new job. Should i phone some salons or am I better to call in? What should I say about myself? Although I'm qualified I'm not a stylist and lack confidence and need guidance, would they expect me to feel like this or would you expect me to be able to get on with it?!

Any advice appreciated, thank you :green:

i'm in exactly the same position i qualified last year and was working in a salon doing the same things, i ended up leaving because i wasn't being trained, now i can't find anyone who is willing to employ a 29 year old junior stylist.

Yeh it is hard!! I won't leave this job unless I have another one to go to, it always seems to be easier to find work when you already have a job but i really lack confidence although i do think i come across as quite confident!
Good luck to you xx

Hi there.

If I were you I would just stick with it. You will eventually do more work and gain experience. It all takes time. If you feel you can do more, just explain this to the manager and he/she may let you loose under guidance on some clients.

You could leave and try to find another job, but you will ultimately be in the same situation.

Good luck. xx
