Hi,

I am going to be enroling on the nvq level 2 night course next week!! excited.

Its only took me 8 years since leaving school to get round to decided what I actually want to do lol.

Is there any tips of what I should expect, what I would need etc,do I buy equipment from them?

Super excited cant wait for sept now.

xxx:D

Hi, I did the same course and finished it a year ago, really enjoyed it, do you have a Salon placement?

I bought my own equipment and didn't buy the colleges' but tHat's your choice, I found the course quiet good but very basic, I put a lot of practise in in my own time and bought a lot of practise heads to practise my highlighting cutting blow drying styling and perming, you do get out of it what you put in though, I would have liked to do a Salon apprenticeship but was too old at 35!

I am now self employed building up my own mobile business, and I love it so much !

All the best and enjoy !

I dont really want to do salon work tbh, I have two children and want to be flexible with them as they are only 3 and 4 and I really want to be mobile as I am doing nails, tanning, waxing etc. Im not the kind of salon person, quite quiet and timid lol

I think its just I want to have freedom in what I choose to do and how much time i spend with the little ones.

I work fulltime at the min and its a killer I hate it so I think working in a job I hate so much has finally given me the kick up the bum to do what I have always wanted!

What kind of things do I need to buy or will they tell me on the day? No idea lol

I cant wait to get stuck in :)

you will usually get a college kit which consists of rollers , blow drier, scissors, combs brushes etc.. unless you choose to buy your own in which case you can ask them for a list of items you will need
from what i remeber although its 19 yrs since i trained , lol firstly we went through learining consultations etc.. then how to gown up .. you will progress on to shampooing and conditioning treatments .. then it will be cutting and blowdrying , lastly i think color and perming
they might do it all different now because from what i gather the course is a lot shorter (i did full time for 2 yrs ) so they must compact it more now
one thing i will say is once you start doing your practicals .. grab anyone you can to practice on be it family , friends anyone as it will really help you also use the internet for watching videos etc.. as they didnt have this in my day , lol and it makes things a lot easier :)
good luck and enjoy yourself , xx

yeah it is only for 1 year learning all the things you mentioned above.

I will speak to them properly next week and find out more!!

you have been a great help.

Thank you x :D

I was in the same boat tbh, i couldn't commit to a salon due to children commitments etc, i worked in a salon to do my level 1 14 years ago and loved
the experience i got but like you, i didn't like the environment, it was really bitchy, (too many competetive girls under one roof!)

I just said about the place because we were told that it's now compulsory to have a salon placement (mine was only a few hours a week as all i could manage) as it's a national vocational qualification, they've really stepped up on the vocational bit. But check with your college first, i know a few girls on my course who never got round to getting a placement, i'm glad i did though, i got to pick the stylist's brains for a year and watch all their different techniques which was invalubale.

Like i said before it was great, but very basic, I work for myself now but I've just decided to drop colouring (but continue highlighting as i find it more straight forward) as i feel to be really competent colouring people's hair you
really need your level 3 which covers colour and colour correction, it's definately worth a look at for after your level 2 if you can stretch to it :)

If I have to get a salon placement im going to be buggered as I work fulltime. Leave at 8 am and have to travel to bham and dont get back till 6 and my eldest starts school in sept. There seems to be so many obstacles to get over but im sure I will do it!!

Yeh defo going to do level 3 after level 2 I dont think me training for 6 months is going to give me the knowledge I need to perform to my best so defo the level 3.

Also my hairdresser is amazing she does my hair at home so Im going to be cheeky and ask her to guide me aswell.

Yeh I dont really like salons to many ego's in them especially with young ones but that is my opinion. I dont like bitchyness and competing!

Ahh i dunno im sure it will all come together,it always does!!

Thank you x x :p

absolutely! go for it! where there's a will there's a way
