Hi, I'm Chris and basically I have chronically bitten my nails since the age of 12 when my father passed away and never seemed to be able to control this habit. And frankly I'm sick of the way my hands look.. and extremely tired of hiding them away or feeling self conscious because of them (I have enough things to feel self conscious about).

I will attach a picture of both of my hands and seek professional advice / help from a professional community such as this one :)

I don't know whether my only options are to let them grow as much as I can, or resort to getting fake nails made.

I'm completely oblivious to style and everything that is beauty but all I know is that my hands make me feel terrible and if there are options available I would love some input from this fabulous community.

Please note I am totally ashamed of my hands and just need some advice on whether there is anything possible to help with them bar chopping them off Iranian style.

Also I have been reading a few other men getting fake nails and they look fantastic but I don't know how they looked before :( so hard to see what I can expect... but anything that would resemble a "normal" set of nails would be ideal!

And I tried to grow them for 4 months and they just get extremely brittle and break and look horrible I imagine I have done very long lasting damage and don't really expect a the miracle but something would be nice :)

- also as this is my first post on the forum (I've been reading for a while now) and this is against the rules or offends anyone in any way (the Iranian joke perhaps) I apologize and bid you fare well with my Shrek hands.

Regards
Chris

Hey Chris, welcome to this amazing site!

Your post is well written and very candid, there is almost certainly going to be someone on here who can help you with your nails.

And when that 'someone' has helped you, I hope you will post updates and pictures so we can see your progress.

I really hope you pop up now and again and keep us company

Hi Chris,

I have many friends whose nails look like this... The biggest challange will be breaking the subconsious habit of chewing when your not even aware of it...

It is uncommon for males to wear nails (myself included I assure you) so....

your major option is to learn how to manicure and care for your nails so that you become aware of them and the condition of them...

I would suggest finding a nail professional who can help with a manicure and preferrably one who can show you how to perform a manicure yourself to give you a 'new' habit for your nails.. It will take a long time but they can and will recover if you can find the strength to break the habit...

take a look on www.sweetsquared.co.uk I'm sure there will be a salon finder on there and this will be a good start as they have to be CND certified to get on the website. CND techs are generally very knowledgable and helpful...

good luck matey...

thank's for the reply's I've been trying to condition myself to stop biting them and it worked until I woke up with my left hand nails completely chewed off.. seems I've even started to bite my nails in my sleep which is rather worrying.

I'm contemplating trying out hypnotherapy for it and seeing how that goes, I'm not exactly a believer but I'm willing to give it a try :)

Thanks again!

also might be investing in some gloves for sleep.. good job I sleep alone so no awkward explanations for that!
