Hey,

Ive only joined today so hope I am posting in the right box! I am currently using all L'Oreal colouring products and always seem to falter when it comes to reds/coppers etc. Had a client today who had an all over tint of 5.6 and another on wednesday with virgin hair who I plan to do 7.31 all over with slices of 7.4. Somehow they never seem to come out as rich as planned.....??! Any ideas.

I must admit that 90% of my colour base have highlights so am used to the high lift tints etc but reds/coppers and toning is so big at the moment I want to just get it spot on. I do tend to add some base (like today I added 5.0) which I probably didnt need as literally no white hair - is this why? Thught it was just a way to hold the colour longer.....

Cheers! K xx

Adding a 5 to a 5.6 will pretty much kill the red as the bases in majirel are green toned. If you need grey coverage with the coppers and reds, use the golden bases instead ( the .3's)
You really needn't add base unless covering grey. The tonal qualities in majirel are far better without a load of base deadening everything.

There is no benefit in terms of a colour lasting longer when base is added.

If you're adding 5 to reds/coppers it will kill a lot of the red but if you're adding 5,0 there's not much point in the red atall. 5,0 are generally just using on their own for covering extremely resistant colourless hair, as majirel are great at covering white hair anyway, ,0's are really a last resort as they are really flat deep base colours....

If you try using just the target colour, ie 6,66 , and see how that works out for you, if that still isn't quite working how you'd like it to, add some majimix of the same tone in with your colour, don't be under the impression you need to use half/half mixing ratio or anything as drastic as that, if its merely a boost in vibrancy you're after, an inch of concentrate will suffice :)

Failing that just stick some majicontrast on and colour over the top with the target shade, as this with achieve lift and absolute vibrancy which will come through the colour you put on the top :)

Hope this has helped a bit, sorry i rambled on but i love L'oreal colours :)

should we be using a base more so if the ends are fading? or would adding a bit of majicontrast combat this?

I was just wondering if I've been doing the right thing lol I've been adding base to the root regrowth to avoid root glow when using reds and coppers !!
Is that wrong ??
is it only for grey hair that base is needed? Xx

NEITHER!!

If the ends are fading faster and faster, this is due to increased porosity from excessive colouring! Even when you darken, the peroxide will lift, causing porosity, so i personally never use permanents on the ends when doing roots!

Always refresh colour with a quasi or even semi, as they are in most cases, ammonia free and will not lift the hair, it will reduce the porosity so , when you change the colour, you wont have to worry about doing a whole head of permanent with the ends fading really quickly.

Also what you'll find is using a quasi on the ends will increase the shine and reduce split ends ;)

i need not explain why you shouldn't use majicontrast after the above explanation...well at least i hope i don't need to! :D

That is one way of combatting root glow, but then you're not giving your client the colour she wants if you're toning it down?

Do you not refresh the colour on the ends when doing a regrowth? because if you do that, you wouldn't get a contrasted root glow.

I do freshen up the ends and I always use a quasi for example I do 6.66rr on one client and always add extra base to root only a little mind u but the ends she had darker colour on before we went red so it never cane up as vibrant on ends as it did on root it always looks ok buy I know once when I didn't add base there was a real root glow :(

This is all very confusing lol !! ( it don't take much haha ) xx

Well, why dont you try taking the colour out the ends with a colour reducer such as Affinage Eraser or Goldwell Colour Remover, it wont damage the hair and you'll be able to get even coverage, and best of all, you can look at the colour and be really happy with the result instead of just thinking it's ok.

Just a thought :)

It was black live!!! Have done three bleach baths over the course of 10 months and been trimming she is naturally a base 5
Think it just has to grow out she has long hair.
She tops up with crazy colour and it looks very vibrant
Just feel out of my depth with reds xx

I too, use l'oreal colours and love them, but when it comes to reds feel a little out of my depth too.
I have a client on Monday who has coloured hair with dip dyed ends who wants to go all over red. She is a base 6 and we have chosen 6.62. Can anyone suggest the best way to go about the application for this please? :)

prepig with an orangy red on the light bits only, rinse and dry. Straight over with the 6.62. Do not add base unless she is more than 20% grey. If she has more than 20% grey, add 6.3 as your warm base.
I would apply the colour to the whole length, and process under gentle heat.

For your prepig, mix copper and red dialcolour, unless you have access to a better semi.

thank you very much for your response - that is what i shall do! :) fingers crossed all goes well :) x
