I'm due to start my make up artistry course very soon, and I want to start buying wee bits and bobs since I have the spare money to do so!

Whats the best make up to buy for my first year?
I was maybe thinking stocking up on MUA from superdrug as I do love that range and it really does the job (for me anyways lol) and great prices!

Any advice will be great!! :D

Who are you doing your training with? sometimes training courses will work with a specific brand and you will be able to buy testers at greatly reduced rates.

Personally, I would steer clear of a kit that only has high street brands in, if people are paying for a make up service they do expect the MUA to use cosmetics that are not available to buy in the high street, but that doesn't mean that you could not have some pieces that are, I've got Gosh eyeshadows and primers in my kit alongside what is classed as professional brands.

If you've got money to invest now I would buy a good set of brushes, a good concealer (the Charles Fox ones are good, and you only need a little so they will last ages) some foundation for all skin types (liquid, cream etc, these can be mixed to clients skin shades) and some eyeshadows, pencils etc in neutral colours, then you can build your kit as you go. Don't buy any eye colours at the moment that are too bright as you may not use them.

Why don't you give Art Deco a call? They do sample sizes and student kits and the make up is very good.

Aww fantastic :)
My kit doesn't include make up, but everything else, I was thinking the Revlon foundations as I love them.
And the high street brands were just for me to practise for the first couple of months, but I think I will defo look into the art deco :)
And its a Glasgow college I'm studying at :)

Because you are on your way to becoming a professional you will be eligible for a professional discount , every company is different but i would say save your money and wait for you professional discount cards as you will more than likely be able to buy the higher end products for the same as or even cheaper than high street brands.

Also be wary of buying high street brands just to practice with, you will find them harder to deal with (particularly eyeshadows) and may make your learning process more difficult.

If you have to absolutely buy something right now , invest in top of the range brushes that will last you years with proper care. I'd recommend hakahodo brushes , they're hand made Japanese make up brushes that are the rolls royce of any make up brushes on the market to day , not cheap (and they don't offer any professional discount) but will last you a decade or more with proper care.

As a make up artist you will learn you are only as good as your brushes , you can make any make up work in a pinch, not true for poor quality brushes so spend your money wisely and best of luck :D

Hellllo:)

I'm a free lance make up artist in the fashion and editorial industry

I bet your so excited for your courses:) good luck on it as well....

So for you kit

It really depends what you want to do but I would suggest
MAC
Make up forever
Illamasqua
Bobbi brown do a good foundation and lipstick pallet with every skin colour and tone in which is good if your doing fashion shows ect

If u want to do bridal and stuff that like bare minerals are good (I haven't used them but heard people say good stuff about them for bridal)

Skin care a would say get for your kit because you need a basic cleanse tone moisturise to start off I would recommend dermalogica because it's fragrance free and i have never found anyone allergic to it. Also it's well known.

I would also say you need to have the best make up in your kit with well known world wide brands because it will make u look more appealing to customers.

Also like someone's already said people are paying for a service and if you turn up with rimmal they might use that every day and might be abit disappointed.

Benefit do a good eyebrow kit
I also use a lot of there boing I think it's called that? It's amazing for cover up.

Also I use a transfer powder from boots £5 I also have the mac one and it's just as good :)

Also try and get some "lucas pawpaw ointment"
This is amazing lipbalm from australia and I use it for all most everything!

Hope I've helped you it's all I can think of at the moment haha but if you have any more questions please ask

Also you can apply for all discount cards at mac bobbi brown bare minarials ect if you are training or have passed a course and you re working as a make up artist so you can get discounts :)

Thank you so much for all the advice you's have gave me so far!

It means the world and I've opened up a wee saving account just so I can start putting money buy for when I go to buy everything!
And I am very excited for the course!
I've been wanting to do a make up course for such a long time after I did my hairdressing, but it didn't pan out the way I planned it too lol!
So I'm ever more determind this time!

I think within the next few weeks I'll head into Glasgow to MAC, and the department stores for a wee nosey and of course apply for a discou
nt card aswell!

I also found out today that it will be a skin truth cleanser, toner and moisteriser set in my kit.. Is that any good?
I will defo go for the dermoligica as I've heard great things!

Thank you again and again for the advice though! :D xxx
