hi guys,
it's a silly question i know but does any one know how to go about making a portfolio for a make-up artist. i am studying as a make-up artist but i don't have a portfolio and i don't know just what i need in it, any ideas... or if there are any make-up artist out there can you tell me how you got started in this business, i would to do weddings or maybe fashion shows, any way I'm here and all ears......

If at the mo you are still studying i would get yourself a good camera and a nice book/folder or even photo album to start with and start taking before after and maybe even during photos of everything you do at college and anythink you do at home.

Hi, i do makeup and i started by asking friends/ family members to be a model for me, take before pics (esp if doing bridal) as people like to see the transformation, then do makeup and get them to wear a nice top and do their hair then take ur after pic. For fashion i wouldnt neccesarily do before pics as people dont really wanna see this. You can get portfolios from staples and really thick plastic wallets like they use for art to display ur pics in this looks more professional than them from woolies lol. I also mount the pics on black paper it looks nicer

thats a great idea i may give that ago myself!!!:)

Yes, definitely get a good camera and photograph everything you do; you can then choose your best work to put into your portfolio.

Also check out sites such as Net-Model.com - Online portfolios for Models, Photographers, Agencies, and Stylists. - there are often models and photographers looking for make-up artists for shoots; if you're just starting out, you may want to consider TFP (time for prints) shoots where you would get a set of professional photographs for your portfolio in return for doing the make-up for the shoot.

I'm always happy to help out as a model if anyone wants to try something a bit different for their portfolio too :green:

thanks for that the camera i have is not very good and you cant really see the change in look that good, but i like the idea of showing the photos on black paper.i am a bit nervous though doing bridal make up,i don't want to mess it up

like already mentioned get your friends round and do the whole thing on them hair, make up the lot the only thing i would suggest it practise on anyone willing and take pics!!

A good camera is definitely worth the investment, especially when you compare it to how much you will likely spend on putting a decent make-up kit together.

As for bridal make-up, as long as you get enough practice beforehand (and I'd say that at least one practice session with the bride-to-be is essential) then you should be fine on the big day itself...

At least it's still 7 or 8 months away

Sounds like quite a mission though what with all the bridesmaids and mothers as well - that's 7 people in all, and you certainly don't want to rush the bride!

 hi i would get a pho:hug:to album thats all i did to keep ur make up pics in a good camara and a memery stick to store your pics on and use a combination of black and white shoots while training start then its great when u see improvement in ur work right buzz :Grope:

Good luck and best wishes. Like nails, make-up can be sooooo addictive.

I agree that you need to practice, practice on friends and family. Take before and after pics at different angles with a good digital camera with a macro facility (flower logo).

See if you can shadow somebody (bridal or fashion artist) to gain some experience. You won't get paid for it but it will be brill for the experience alone plus you can add this to your CV.

I have this problem at the moment, i'm booked for two wedding fairs in march and haven't done my portfolio yet, i havesome pictures from three brides from last year and one bridesmaid, how many more would you say i would need picture wise for a good portfolio, or just the more the merrier, sorry to hi-jack the thread, it just reminded me i need to get moving with it:eek:

This is what I did at college for my make-up course, we had to do three people each for wedding, everyday and photographic, one from each age group. We also had to put in what makeup we used and where and what brushes we used, etc. Client's skin type, and lots of other stuff I cant remember.

you can get the 'plain face' drawings off the net and print a load off - maybe this pic is in a book I'm not too sure!

for trial runs I'd record the products used and pop a little on that paper and seal it with hairspray, hope this helps xx

This is also what I do. It also helps to print off the face drawings onto textured paper as opposed to smooth, plain paper. Make up goes on more realistically and blends better. I promise it works!

Seal it with hairspray? Great idea!

i dunno if this had already been suggested cos i havent read all the replies but if like me ur photography isnt too good get a cheap photoshop application 2 tidy ur pics up and also settin up a website can get u alot of business or a myspace, which is wot i use. good luck xx
