Hi,

I have very thick dark clumpy hair, that curls in certain parts, and can become very annoying sometimes. It is proving quite difficult to style as the hair strands curl and twist together.

I'm looking to style my hair as a disheveled texture/pompadour/wavy type.

My hair is quite long now, and I will be going to have a haircut soon for a tidy up and to remove some of the curls and tangles, but I don't want too much to be cut off to style. The strands will clump together again in a week or so.

My hair generally is quite dry, could this be the cause? What is the difference between a conditioner and moisturisers

Any advice on achieving this hair style with type of hair? ie: gel or wax.

Thanks

Having difficult hair & disappointment with most past cuts means you should shop around for a stylist that has more experience with your type of hair.Go in to shops & ask the stylists questions/advice, what they would do to get the result you want. Get a few pics of the look you desire to show them....more than just 1 pic! Spend a bit more on a cut from a decent place & a senior stylist.

What your looking for is someone whom understands what you want & tells you their plan of attack & what their techniques provide look wise. Ex. Keeping length & altering the hair to promote more texture/movement is more of a textured cut/interior cut where the length is trimmed/un touched & the interior of the hair is altered by slide cutting bulk out with scissors in small-med chunks freehand. They will feel your hair alot b4 & while cutting to balance out the cut. This removes bulk while leaving length making hair easier to have a style & more movement.

Avoid anyone who wants to use thinning shears for the whole cut as these provide general overall bulk removal evenly & are more for blending not giving a tailored style plus they frizz up hair easily!

Curls/waves are naturally dry to begin with. Skip a shampoo or 2 & just rinse well & use conditioner only. Look in to getting a pro conditioner that doesn't smell to girly that is formulated for chemically treated hair. These have more moisture promoting qualities for dry hair types & can be used on non chemically treated hair for their benefits.

I have curly hair & shampoo 1xweek + rinse down & condition 1x/week so 2xweek=1 shampoo+2 conditioners & find this a good way to keep natural oils in the hair reducing the frizzy/puffy factor.
