Hello,

My girlfriend has an allergy to acrylics and basically anything plastic. She use to love wearing nails and going to get them done but now cannot do it because of the allergy.

I was just wondering if anyone has come across this before and is there an alternative?

She has tried Gel nails too and that causes same issues it inflames her skin, eyes etc.

It’s a fairly common issue and as far as I understand, once you become allergic, that’s it for life.

She should go to the GP and ask for a referral to a dermatologist who will make a test to find out which specific chemical ingredients she is reacting to. You may need to push the GP for this - some are unsympathetic and consider nail product allergies as self inflicted (which in truth they are).

Once you know the ingredients, she can look for products that don't contain these. Perhaps she will be lucky. But allergies only occur because under cured nail product has come into contact with the skin.

It is not clear from your post if your gf makes nails or only visits a salon. If she is a salon customer, the allergy probably is due to visit low cost high street salons who often use a larger brush and this means that the acrylic and liquid touches the skin. She should find a professional salon.

Nice of you to try to help her out.

Some ingredients are used in both gels and acrylics. That's why she has the same reaction. But there are some hypoallergenic products available. Get the list from the dermatologist first, and then if you need more help come back or send me a message.
