Hey!

Recently I removed some acrylic nails that I had put on a while back in a salon. I normally hate how rough they are with my hands in there, but I think I might just be overly sensitive.

Anyways, after removing them (I just kind of pulled them off after a month, they were already hanging on by a thread, so it didn't really hurt or seem to cause much force or damage, they just basically fell off) I noticed that my smile lines were kind of... receding? The edges near the corners seemed to have separated from the skin underneath the nail plate, so now my smiles lines are no longer like a smooth curve, but look uneven and bubbly where the skin seems to be no longer attached.

It doesn't hurt, it just kind of scared me to see my skin separating from my nail plate, haha.

Does any one know what may have caused this? I have had acrylics in the past with no issues.

Actually now that I am paying attention to my fingers, they do hurt a bit, and the nail is actually not growing out straight any more, but kinda turning upwards on the corners. Also it's a tiny bit discolored on a few of them, I'm thinking fungus? :Scared:

Is there any way to get rid of it faster, or just wait for it to grow out? Also in the future, what can be done to avoid gettin fungus under my acrylics? BLEGH!

1.go to a good nail technician who is professional.
2.go to a nail tech to soak them off properly and don't pull them off.
3.you could have coursed the nails to separate by pulling them off.

That's the advice I would give you.x

Thanks for the advice! But like I said they were barely holding on my a thread, one of them actually popped right off while driving, it had the same nail thingy going on as a few others, the flipped up edges. I'll be more careful, but yea the nail was smooth underneath and there was very little visible damage except for the weird edges at the end

You have onycholysis (technical term for nail plate seperation from nail bed)

The most common cause is mechanical force. Defined as excessive force or repeated stress action. Basically the length of your nails combined with the extra force this creates has torn you hyponychium (nail plate seal under the free edge) Once this seal is broken additional stress will accelerate further damage rapidly.

Once this seal is torn your nail bed is now exposed to external elements and potential infection. You can not do anything to 'fix' this condition other than look after your nails.
Stop applying the stress and wear your nails in a condition and length that protects the seal. Once the stress is removed from the equation the only product that will help is a high quality cuticle oil applied to the seal. This oftens the skin and increases the rate it re-seals.

When an enhancement grows - the balance goes

Look after and maintain enhancements and they protect your natural nails. Ignore the maintenance and they can cause problems

Hope that helps

Good advice from Envy.

Yes we all know you shouldn't pick nail enhancements off, but whats done is done no point in going on about it, the advice she wants is how to fix this, not a lecture on how it happened.

Keep your nails trimmed short, to stop anymore pressure on the broken seal, Also use a cuticle oil (CND Solar Oil is best if you can get some) and use it at least twice a day over and under your nails. This should speed the healing of the seal up.

Regarding the discolouration it is not fungal more likely a bacterial infection, and now the enhancemens are off, won't get any worse and the discolouration will grow out as your nails grow.
Hope this helps.

Ah wow! Thanks so much from both of you, that's highly informative. I'm really glad the community here is so helpful, I don't think I could have found that answer on google. I'll do better to look after my nails from now on :)
