Hello I just recently started college as a hair styling student through a program called OYAP. I am also doing a two credit co-op at a hair salon for two semesters though my high school. Anyways I am new to this site so I am not sure how to describe my passion hair styling but I do love it and I love interacting with clients and such. Anyways I attend my hair styling class once a week and I am worried I may forget certain things or that I may not do so well. I know that one good way is to study what we learned but I am wondering if anyone could give me advice on what else I could do during the the time spent away from my classes so that I can improve on certain skills and aspects of hair styling. I am asking this mainly because I have only attended four classes so far so we have not learned much but 6 days away from the class is a long time when all you do as a co-op student is clean. I know we are not allowed to cut our manikin heads unless instructed to do so, so I am wondering if there is another way to practice like maybe on barbie dolls or something like that?

Sorry if I come off sounding like an idiot I just want to make sure I sound serious so don't offend anyone or make my self out as some one who sees this profession as easy and glamorous and such.

I am a student too. After lessons - I write down an 'idiot' guide, which is literally step by step how I did something in my own words ie, did the hair start off wet, how I sectioned it off, what mix was used or type of cut etc etc.

I also went out and bought a couple more dolls heads, both with real hair (synthetic hair damages your scissors) and I practise on them. I also have asked friends/family over for hair treatments/hair ups/sets etc.
Hope this helps.

Hi, hopefully someone from canada will answer who understands the systems you have there. Is there any chance you can get a saturday job at a salon even if its voluntary? At least that way you will be able to observe. Also could you buy another manakin to practice at home. Really its all about practice. :)

OMG That is such a good idea! I should write my own idiot guild cause I can be a real idiot xD When I first started my blunt cut I kept accidentally adding layers cause I always watch the hair stylist do it so it's like an automatic response.

Buy another manikin head is a very good idea :) Although I would have to find a way to put back the money I take out of my savings. Right now I don't have a job and it is very important to me to be able to pay for the second level of college on my own and as of right now I have no idea how much it will cost me.

Theres a lot of youtube tutorials out there aswell..make sure you look at professional ones only though...you dont wanna pick up bad habits. Try habia and whatever board you use for examining! Great to see a student with so much passion, good luck!
