Hi! Newbie here...

If I use a builder gel to create the extension, do i still need a base coat before I use gel colour coat?

I would follow whatever steps the gel system you're using says. Personally I would agree with Louisekjh that no you do not. Still though, certain brands have certain steps they want you to follow for best possible results.
