I am going to be studying my nvq level 2 in beauty therapy and after that the level 3 massage unit and level 3 electrical . Does anyone know how many Level 3 units i need to do to become level 3 qualified? The college I am going to do not offer a whole level 3 part time so I would need to just do multiple units.

If you want to do an exact match to a full level 3 qualification, go on the vtct website and look up what units make up each level 3 qualification (for example, massage route).

If you're determined to do a full level 3, it may be easier to shop around for somewhere that offers the full level 3 qualification than sourcing separate level 3 units. Having said that, there are so many optional level 3 units for each nvq anyway that you could pick and choose units that best suit what you want to do: lash extensions, intimate waxing, fashion and photographic makeup. There's loads. Definitely look on the vtct website and Google for courses near you.

Thanks I will have a look :) are vtct qualifications an nvq?

I'm coming towards the end of my NVQ level 3 qualification in beauty. In course I have done it covers manual massage, hot stone massage, face electrics, body electrics and all of the anatomy and physiology behind each unit. After this I am going to go on to do a level 3 nail apprenticeship to learn nail extensions.
Hope this helps .

Vtct is an awarding body who awards nvq and other vocational qualifications. Many colleges use them so they are widely recognised.

Most full level 3 courses will contain compulsory units and then optional ones selected by your college or training provider. This is why some people who are level 3 qualified will have a varying set of skills. For example, some level 3 massage route courses will cover facial electricals as an optional unit and others won't.

As long as you are level 3 qualified for the treatments you want to do in industry you will be absolutely fine whether you have done them all as one level 3 or as separate units because they cover exactly the same thing.

I did my beauty and nail qualifications as a full level 3 but have still done individual units for treatments not covered in those ones so ultimately the learning never stops if you're motivated to keep learning.

Laurakate has answered correctly but I thought I might elaborate slightly.

This applies to England, Wales and NI. (Scotland has slightly different levels and awards)

Essentially, you study for either an NVQ or a VRQ and level 2 for both is the basic level to be classed as professionally qualified.

Most students go onto further study and complete level 3 either as a full programme or as individual units. You can still request a certificate upon completion of an individual unit if you're not registered for a full level 3 programme.

Despite the college 'passing' you in your subjects, the official awarding body (who set the standards for the curriculumm) is either VTCT or City & Guilds.

So VTCT awards VRQ's in Beauty Therapy.

I have level 2 and elements of level 3.

I did Swedish massage, aromatherapy and reflexology along with business studies and A and P. I then went to college and did nvq2 beauty. 10 years later I did electrical facials as an accredited course, not an nvq.

To me, it depends why your doing it. If it's for employability, as an employer, I want electrical facials, massage and electrolysis is good! Unfortunately what I get is nail extensions nail extensions and nail extensions [emoji15].

If it's to run your own business look at what you want to do.

My nvq3 was aromatherapy massage, Swedish massage, body electrics, facial electrics, epilation.
A&P an H&S.
I did spray tanning and Indian head as a separate course straight after.
I also did nail ext but the course was dreadful and so was I.
I went to a council run college, I LOVED it and I met my best friend there 10 years ago xz

College is quality :) part time modular courses are a good way to pace your learning journey too.

I would love to do some more level 3 makeup units but am struggling to source them because it's more common for people to do them as a whole level 3 course. Some places offer modules that are more niche such as Asian bridal makeup (vtct). Would love to do that sometime.
