Hey,
Sorry I'm no help but have you tried talking to the colleges student services? They may be able to give you information on the differences between the courses. x

Hi there,

I will pass on my tutors explanations and hope that she is 100% up to date on everything.

I was told that nvq is government subsidised where the diploma is not. They also said diploma is a lot more theory than nvq, and in these industries extra practical gives confidence. The short version is, after paying the full amount for our course, our tutor said diploma's not as well recognised or respected a qualification (something about vrq's, vocational recognised quals, as opposed to nvq, national).

Hope I haven't confused you, but I had to put in extra time to get the practical skills up to speed, and wish I'd have chosen the nvq...just my opinion though (plus my tutors explanation of the difference).

Oh dear me , I have applied for the City guilds level 2 diploma as it was aimed at mature students and I was told it was the only hairdressing course that has a few places and all the others are over subscribed. Im worried now... dont want to be paying over double the price (the cost is £1200 + kit etc etc. ).I wont get any help towards the cost , struggle to pay and come away with a qualification that is classed as sub standard.

Thanks for replying , ill wait and see if I get an interview and ask all these questions. x

Sorry hun, I really didn't mean to panic you, I just wish someone would've told me straight to being with.

We were sold it as ideal for mature students looking to change career. All of us were disappointed to begin with but we had an amazing tutor who decided to teach everything to nvq standard so we wouldn't feel that we missed out.

On the plus side, it was a smaller group so we had very personalised training , we were of a huge age range so we were all comfortable (having been away from education for a while) and bizarrely the nvq didn't do things like perming, were as the diploma did.

Sorry again, I hope this clarifies. I decided diploma level 2 was fine in the end but for level 3 I opted for nvq.

Thanks for your opinion and honesty.

I enrolled online for the only course left which was the level 2 diploma. I will get in earlier for the NVQ level 3 next year. I might not even get a place on the diploma course this sept. I haven't heard back from college yet.

Quick update... I recieved a letter from college saying they are processing my application and if I dont hear from them in 4 weeks to give them a call. So I still dont know what the situation is. Frustrating !

Oh what a pain!!

I just saw your other post about being in Crawley. That's where I did my diploma-lol. Is that where you're studying, central Sussex college? If so, the tutors are really good & very helpful.

Good luck with enrolment.

Yes, central sussex college is where i have applied. I will find out in 4 weeks if there are any places.
We have just moved to the area from Norway and im from North east england.
So just trying to get out and meet people and find my way about.

I know how you feel, I'm from the north west originally-but live in Brighton now.

The wheels of paperwork do turn slowly, but they do get there in the end. As they say, jog their memory if they don't. I may see you in September then!

Are you returning in september to do NVQ 3 ?

I found my local salon services and they have a training centre so thats handy to know.I want to do a lash extension and brow course, either threading or brow definition. Also looking at all the latest nail products and considering doing a conversion course maybe....love the minx and sheelac products. The Hair and beauty industry is certainly an exciting one !

Yes that's the plan. Having work issues at the moment though so I won't know til September.

Yeah you have a sallys and capital in Crawley. I did my lash ext, lash and brow enhancement course with capital and they've been really helpful.
