The past few days I have been in so much pain, under my thumb nail there is a deep long horizontal split. It's not been bleeding but has been weeping. The skin around it (still under the nail) has gone white n pruny like if I has been in the bath for hours. I used to bite my nails awfully bad but the past year have grown them and never had a prob?! Tried to take a pic but you can't see how bad it is. The split is really deep and you can see inside its bright red. Iv been keeping it clean but so far no difference? Should I cut my nail really short so it can get some air to it? Help! Hope this all made since v hard to describe xx

Is it under your nail plate?

Yes, the bottom half of the cut looks attached to the nail and the rest has come away xx

Please help someone! Lol x

has this gotten any better? sounds like something i would go see a doctor about. how did this happen?

Are you wearing nail enhancements? Have you had any treatments recently that could have caused any problems due to exposure to it ??

Thank u both so much for responding!! I only wear gelish on natural nails and have had no treatmenys or used anything different. It started off as what looked like a tiny hole n kept splitting till it had gone the whole way across. Iv totally left it alone and it's healing but the skin along the tip of my nail at the end has gone really hard like it would on your feet! So weird!! Xx

You need to rest your nails from Gelish for a good 2 weeks & ensure that no product is allowed to touch your skin. During which time your skin should heal. You can then try Gelish again & if the same thing occurs then Im afraid you may have developed a reaction to the products...

If I get Gel remover on my face then it will really react now. I used to complete a soak off (not wearing gloves) and when leaving the clients I would rub my face (as a relaxation I've finished for the night sort of way) and I was inadvertantly causing my problems. If I use non acetone nail polish remover it will make my thumbs tingle too, so I have to ensure that I don't run into problems...

This isnt uncommon & will affect nail technicians / hairdressers alike if they continually subject themselves to products...

Thank u so for your reply I have totally rested my nails and its all healed up but started on another finger!! Showed the doc today she's given me cream but is certain it's a reaction.. Gloves for me!! Xx

I feel your pain (literally!) it sounds a lot like contact dermatitis which is what I suffer with.
I would highly recommend you get yourself some matador nitrile gloves (the cheaper ones offer no real protection) all the time, even when you pack your kit up until it clears then every time you handle product after.

I hope your doctor gave you some steroid cream, that helps a lot x

That exactly what he gave me! So relieved someone else had it too! Sorry not wishing u to have it lol it's horrible! I was just planning on wearing gloves for removal? Will I need to use them all the time then? Cos that's the only time product really touches my skin? Thank u for the reply! Xxx

I only wear gloves for the removal process.
I now also use long armed tweezers to soak the cotton mini pad in & tweezer the cotton directly to the nail without even having to get my fingers near it...

My friend is affected by uncured gel touching her skin, so if she's got it on her skin she places her hands within the UV lamp to cure any product thats there. That works for her...

All the time hun, removals hurt the most but it's likely that its the uncured product getting on your skin and causing the reaction in the first place x

It's just so weird where it's getting sore as apart from the removal product I don't get nefin else that far down under my nails. Def investing in some gloves lol xx

I've recently been to the dr to find out that I also ave contact dermatitis :cry:

My thumb started swelling and drying out and I thought nothing of it, then it started under my fingers, they dry up and crack and I get tiny bruises.

Thankfully, like you girls, my dr gave me steroid cream and I'm wearing gloves. I was terrified I'd have to stop doing nails  but thankfully I don't

I hadn't realised how common this was, I don't feel alone now lol xxx

I have contact dermatitis from wearing Gel polish. Will contact dermatitis ever go away? What can I put on my skin prior to doing Gel polish to keep from my skin having a reaction? Being a hairdresser and trying to wear regular polish is impossible.
