I have some fairly big setting rollers that give nice loose curls. My friend wants the same effect but more permanently. We tried smaller rods to perm her hair previously but it wasn't what we were both trying to achieve. She appreciates that a loose curl won't last as long due to the weight of the hair but is it possible to achieve the perm using the same rollers as I use to set her hair? I have done perms before but mostly on my older more classic clients who like the tight perm and then have it set weekly so any advice on the loose perm would be great!!

You can perm hair on any size rollers.
Is it velcro rollers you set her hair with? If so then you'll be fine to perm on them.
The rollers might be different but you just do the perm in the same way x

Hi I just read this and sorry in advance if this is a daft question but just wondering how you would keep the Velcro rollers in the hair while rinsing?

Hey, really interested in this. Only at college on my 1st year at VRQ at the moment but our tutor was mentioning that when we get to level 3 - if we want to go that fa (which i do!) that we do perming on chop sticks and other things tto see teh different effects we can create.

If im right in assuming you can actually perm on any shaoe, its all about breaking down the polypeptide chains and reforming the hair shape?

I have some fairly big plastic rollers so was planning on using them. I didn't know you could perm onto velcro? I thought it ran the risk of frizzing at the ends because of the grip on the roller? I could have picked that up wrong though. We did always got told you could perm round anything as long as it wouldn't be affected by the perm solution.

The chopsticks sounds pretty weird but I really want to try it now!! :green:

Yeah but how could you go through all the rinsing that's involved in a perm on Velcro rollers or chop sticks and them not fall out?? I'm confused. Xx

I have permed on big velcro rollers before. I'm pretty sure we used a hairnet to keep them in while rinsing.

How did the end result turn out? I'm intrigued as my sister has a perm and would prefer it in bigger rollers but as perm rollers aren't that big I may try this and see what it turns out like, what else have we got sisters for apart from experimenting hair ideas on ;) xx

It was back in the 90's so i can't fully remember but i think it was just nice and soft with more volume than anything else. The 90's was all about the volume :)

Oh great thanks kitty,my sisters a volume kinda girl, think I'll give it a go

Worth a go isn't it!

I also thought it was a bad idea to perm on Velcro!?!?

if you do it pls post a pic or pm me as my niece wants more volume and movement but not a traditional perm so am VERY interested in how it turns out :D

Good Luck x

Will be giving this a go on my mum, she loves her hair when it's curly, and loves curly bob's more but I'd told her it will b too much for her to curl it properly constantly, will give this a go, can the rows still be done veryically though as I'd have thought the weight would be too much or can u perm through the net too? Xoxo

If you mean can you put the perm solution on through the net I was thinking we would need to take it off? What about blotting it dry before putting neutraliser on too? Xxx

May be a silly question... could you just not use regular plastic setting roller rather than velcro? the pins would hold it togther, less risk of fish hooks too?
