I've got one lady that insists. It is the old short flick back 1980s style that I cut and blowdry after it has been permed. I hate it but can't get her to change it. At least I know its well done and she is good at blow drying it herself. She is a very 'ahem' large lady and quite self conscious about her looks so I wouldn't force change on her (bless her).
I have to admit it her hair does perm extremely well though and it's easy to blowdry after a good cut.
I only have 2 regular clients who have perms. One is 80-odd and the other is 93, both get it set afterwards. The first salon I trained and worked at was a proper old lady salon and all I did was perms and sets until I hated doing them but now I hardly do them I really enjoy them! My old boss would love to hear me say that!
I do a few. My perm clients are my most regular and reliable. I don't enjoy doing it but hey ho. It's a good skill to have and am glad I learnt. There are four of us in the salon and I'm the only one who perms. However I won't perm long hair or overly coloured hair. Not got the demand or the experience.
i do quite a few perms usually on short hair..and the odd few on shoulder length, dont mind them..dont mind the winding its the rinsing and neutralising which is the pain, luckily these days its much quicker i remember having a perm in my teens and it took hours
Yes I do perms and work with all the ranges also I've got 6 spiral perms booked in over the next two weeks as they've been back on the catwalk in a big way
No i dont unfortunately....as i love winding perms.
I used to do quite a lot about 5 years ago but then moved abroad for 3 years and since being back in UK my client base is much younger this time round!
I'd love to be doing more :green:
Are you serious?? They took it out? Oh wow.....thats drastic.....One of my biggest pet peeves when I am looking to hire a new stylist, is when they slip the little comment in at the end about how 'they turn down perms'
Our salon did 21 perms in January.....thats alot of money to be turning down. It is still an essential part of mastering hair here in Canada.
How can you take perming out of the hairdressing course???
What happens when it comes back into fashion???
You will have lots of hairdressers who dont even know where to start when it comes to perms....
In the salon i trained in we were not allowed to use tongs EVER!!!(actually brilliant way to learn to blowdry perfectly) but we were still trained in the college to use them....
Yes when I taught last year it wasn't compulsory to do perming, yhe students had a choice they could of taken the perming module or plaiting. This year everybody has to do perming and it's been made compulsory and I'm glad because it's a fashion that is coming back round again and come on a hairdresser should know how to perm, I do alot of spiral perms and the list is getting longer.
I know it's silly thing to do, I didn't have the choice to choose perming my college tutors decided i think :/ lol.
I think it is a good skill to have as these things come in and out of fashion.

i'm currently doing a level 2 part time course and we are learning how to do perms but we don't have to do a assesment i put that down to not many people wanting them. But i do say it is a great thing to learn so if you do have a client that would like it you know how to do it even if you don't practice it a lot
