hi girls/guys

I am currently at college studying beauty therapy and have completed a year already, i am due to return for my 2nd year next wednesday to be trained on massage (including aromatherapy) , spray tanning, electrical treatments but i am 16+ weeks pregnant and have been told from head of beauty department i am not allowed to carry out some of these treatments therefore will not pass and gain the qualifications.

i have read up alot on the do's and don't of the treatments and there is too much information to know what it actually true?
i do know some oils are unsafe in pregnancy but alot are safe especially as i am now past 1st trimester.
she also said spray tanning would be a problem because of the allergy risk but the spa in college has a vent to take away the excess tan and have read that i could wear a mask just to be extra safe if i wanted to. and then there were the electrical treatments that i could see why i would not be allowed to have them done..but why not carry the treatment out on others?
my mind is split in 2 with this as i feel very disapointed i am missing this year and would love just get my head down and get it over with..

do u think i have a good fight to return back to college safely next week?
x

They of course have a duty of care toward you and yes it is quite right that some oils should not be used in pregnancy or certain stages of pregnancy but there are also many oils that can so do not see why that would be a problem.
Many beauty therapists carry on working well into their pregnancys there are many on here that have and are.I myself did.Have they actually said you shouldn't come back.

Sounds to me like they're being difficult. We had a girl when I was at college doing her level 3 and as long as she could go through the motions with an almond oil she could pass the aromatherapy because we did preblended.

As for electricals they are perfectly safe to do as far as I'm aware.

If I were you I'd ask to speak to the Principle. Good luck hun and congrats on your pregnancy!! x

Pregnancy is a contraindication to electrical treatments! Esp indirect high freq and galvanic they have a current running through the body!!!!!

I agree that you could do the massage and just use almond oil instead of the preblends; but I do feel that the electricals will be an issue.

To be fair, I think the college are being cautious rightly; if you miscarried and then decided to say that it was because of the E/O's yo were using then you could sue their *****! Yes maybe YOU wouldnt, but there types that would!

oops forgot about those 2. I think as long as you aren't touching the current, those ones will be fine, like faradic on body. Ha thinking about it now, it could be an issue...ignore me lol.

It depends if they will let you do it without turning the current on? I'm not sure how that would work, maybe you could ask if they could defer those till after you've had your baby if it's before the end of the course but still learn it with every one else just do he assessments later on? x

Hi Am hoping for some advise please, heres my dilema..........

I have been working as a therapist for 15 years, i went part time 5 years ago after having my children, and have worked in the same salon for those 5 years, I love my job and like the salon,
but....., I do more late nights than anyone else, i do a wider range of treatments, specialist treatments and take more money into the salon than the other 2 therapists, I have recently found out that 1 girl straight out of college is on only 50p less than me and the other girl who has 3 years experience is on 50p more.
I am seriously considering ditching the salon job and going fully mobile but am worried about being able to draw enough clients in to cover expensive children!
I have booked out a meeting with my boss to discus this ( without being able to mention the other girls earnings) how would you go about this??:|

woops...... sorry put my message in the wrong place! am a newbie to this

but because i am nt actually getting the treatment done surely electrical treatments shouldnt be to dangerous for me? i would be back around march april after having baby so i could ask if i could carry out my assesments after this ? suppose ppl would see this as being unfair tho. hmm its a difficult one i really want to go back x

There are some, which matt reminded me, that the current goes through you as well as the client. So you won't be able to do those. I would think it was very possible to do it, forget unfairness lol. 2 of the girls in my uni class had babies last year and they managed so I don't see why you shouldn't x

Hi Kayleigh,

Just looking at this from a different "angle" would it be possible to put your training "on hold" and maybe rejoin after you have had your baby?

I really think you should allow yourself to enjoy your training and get the most out of it you possibly can and I'm not sure you will be able to do that when you/your college have concerns about treatments, if they start treating you differently to other students (which they will have to) will you be happy? Also my love, you will probably start feeling fairly knackered soon and may not be able to give it all you would like to.

Are you qualified to start doing any treatments yet? If. for example, you can do manicures and eyelash tinting etc, why don't you start doing that on clients to keep you working and bring in some money and learn the other stuff later. If you are not qualified in anything but have covered it, it may be worth you doing a fast-track course so you can start treating clients?

You sound like you are really keen to continue, which is admirable, but be kind to yourself too,

Sx

There was a girl at college who could not get clients in to model, and could not pay for them, so the college gave her a certificate on the units that she passed.x

Hi

When I was at college i could not do indirect high frequency or use some oils or have curtain treatments done on me for health reasons but I still passed my NVQ level 3. So I don't see why they should not be able to make allowances especially if you are really keen and passionate about beauty.

That is just my thought on the matter though.

All the best with your pregnancy and your beauty career.

Kirsty

Firstly congratulations on your exciting news!!
Im currently 37weeks pregnant and stopped full time treatments 3 weeks ago, did part time up until last week now im on maternity....yeahy!!!
I have done all treatments but been selective.
Precautions have to be taken, the microdermabrasion suppliers I use told me not to use on pregnant women but I have used it on myself. I can see where your college are coming from, If (god forbid) something happen they could be liable. Talk to them and see if there is a way around it, as previously mentioned in this thread, going through the motions with treatments such as aromatherapy and electricals or doing the units you can and doing the rest after bubs is born?
Good luck and wishing you a happy and easy pregnancy!x:D

Congratulations :)
The same thing happened to me, I fell pregnant on my level 2 course and the College I studied with didn't allow me back as they're would have been certain products that I wouldn't be able to use as its harmful. I don't understand why they can't just let you do the treatments with other products, as long as you have the knowledge of all products :-/ maybe its just to be on the safe side though hun. I took a gap year, and believe me when I had my little one, I don't think I'd have been able to continue with college in the early months anyway lol. I hope you get it sorted. X

That's ridiculous! Surely they can work around your pregnancy! I was a full-time therapist and salon manager until I was 34 weeks pregnant with my son and went back part-time until I was 35 weeks pregnant with my daughter I didn't stop doing any treatments including spray tanning and both babies were absolutely fine! I haven't ever had to stop doing any of my treatments on pregnant clients either!
