Having been a tech for a number of years and having the confidence in what I do, mainly thanks to the educators that got me through my masters, I was alarmed when a client came back in to the salon complaining that her nails has simply "floated off" in the bath ( there's an alternative to acetone I didn't know about! ) She brought her enhancements back in with her for me to "stick them back on!" On examination, I could see where her natural nails had been ripped off with the tips and after a tactful discussion explained that they don't just float off and could have to have a new set but would have to charge her full price again. Whilst I feel right in my principles not to do them free of charge, here's my dilema.... should I have just done another set for nothing and not risk her bad mouthing my business ( which is all important to me ) or just accept it's a case of you can't please everyone all of the time??

Hell no you did the right thing!! She clearly picked and pulled them off and wanted a new set for nothing! it's the equivalent of wearing a top once, ripping it and then taking it back to the shop for a refund! That sort of person would bad mouth you whatever you did so at least you are in pocket and she knows she won't get a free ride from you and therefore won't tell her friends to do the same! Oooo these people annoy me!

Some people are just BARKING MAD!! I think you did the right thing

Thanks guys..thought I had heard excuse possible....nothing should surprise me anymore but there's always one who manges to push the boundaries that little bit further!!!

Yep i'm with the others CHARGE HER!

If she can get away with taking advantage of you once it could happen again!

Must remember to start saving my bath water, hell of alot cheaper than acetone....

I had a salon in Leeds for many years .... maybe this is thesame lady who came out with that one to me many years ago. :)

Of course you did the right thing. If you do not demand respect you will never get it. Let her take her tricks elsewhere if she doesn't like it. Do they think we just dropped of a Christmas tree or something?

quote ''do they think we dropped off a christmas tree or something''  i think that just about sums some people up!

I think you definately did the right thing - if anything it shows that you know your stuff and arent going to be taken for a mug! if you'd said "oh dear, let me put another set on for you for nothing" she'd probably be telling everyone she fleeced you and you obviously dont know that nails dont just float off in the bath (pmsl at that) and you'd then have all her mates trying it on too! well done you! x

Some clients will do anything to scam!! And it's true that if you let them, they'll do it again and again and have their friends trying it too. I "fired" a client for a situation just like this! She would pick her nails off, and keep coming in every few days for replacements and expected them to be free!! I commend you for putting your foot down. Well done!!

Stick to your guns. She was just trying it on I am afraid.

Its so amazing that people have the audacity to even try it. I personally agree with everyone else, you definately did the right thing and lets face it you don't want clients like her anyway if thats what she does.

I think we could all tell some stories. We own shops and we certainly could!

This board is so helpful for giving advice and fast judging by the speed of the replies and that is what makes it the One Stop Help Board

My advice to you is: practice having a 'standard' saying, eg, obviously, I need to discuss this with the manufacturer/supplier or something, give me your number that is best to contact you and will will get back to you by the end of the week' This helps deflect the immediate problem, esp. if it is not a technical skill issue. Takes a few breaths and have a coffee, glass of wine or something to calm down.Ring back later, state not a technical problem but on closer examination, looks like she has misused and refer her to your aftercare advice.

One you have 'normalised' this,it becomes much easier to do. Also a good tip, imagine something that you want that costs the same as your refund - do you still want to refund someone who hasn;t looked after your work?
