Hi all, just had a phonecall from one of my lovely ladies who I applied Orly Gel FX to last week. It was a brand new bottle bought from my local wholesaler so nothing untowards there.

The colour was a beautiful dark, smoky purple but she said that nearly all her nails have started to turn patchy and bright pink??? She was the first client I used this particular one on and I must say, it took 3 layers to get anywhere near an even coverage (it was like water) so I was a bit disappointed with it. I did notice around the neck of the bottle there was a ring of light pink pigment.

Has anyone else experienced strange colour fading/changing with Orly (or any other brand for that matter)? I've been doing this for years with different brands and haven't had any problems to date.

Any opinions appreciated,
Thanks xx

What colour was it? I had plum noir on for 2 weeks and nothing like that. Cleaned my house without gloves and everything.

Not heard of anything like this. Best to get her in and have a look.

I haven't noticed any change of colour with any of my polishes so it will be interesting to see what has happened to have this effect.

If it is Plum Noir that is one of my most popular colours so use it a lot and find that I have to use 3 coats because of its thin consistency so nothing different there. However, I have never had a pink ring around the top of the lid so wonder if there was a problem with the bottle when you bought it?

I've not had any problems with colour changing with any of the colours I own. Did you give it a good shake? Maybe the pigments had settled to the bottom of the bottle?

Fading of gel colours can occur with certain substances used by clients and one of them is anti-ageing products and certain suntan lotions that contain deet is another. Excessive chlorine in the water plus added sun exposure is another. These polishes do not form a barrier to everything. Clients should know this from their aftercare advise sheets that you give them.

I has the same thing with a client with Monroe's Red but only 1 finger changed colour. It too is quite a 'watery' colour & took 3 layers. The one finger turned a coral shade.

It's not happened with anyone else since so a mystery.

If you read my post above, it really is not a mystery ... There is a good explanation for it and it happens with all gel polishes occasionally if clients use things that contain chemicals that affect them. Make sure you warn them in your aftercare advise.

Anyone who wishes my Shellac aftercare advise (as long as you email me your Sweet Squared customer number for verification that you are a professional that uses Shellac) I will be happy to send it to you. Gigirouse at gmail dot com.
