Hi,

Can't find the answer I need so I'm hoping someone will shed some light!

I've self taught with shellac and gel extensions and will be with acrylics shortly. I don't really want to work in a salon but would like to be able to do this on the side to make some extra cash. What, if any, qualifications so I need? I'm trying to find a course but they're all so expensive. Would like to be trained in the cheapest way possible as I don't have much spare cash. What would you all recommend?

Thank you in advance x

You definitely need to do an accredited course. If you're competent in what you do then a cheaper course might suffice if you just want the certificate? You'll need an accredited course so you can get insurance x

You'll need training to gain insurance to be able to work on the public. Please don't self teach it's a lot harder than it seems and a huge amount of underpinning knowledge is required. Also, working 'on the side' is illegal so I wouldn't write it in a public forum x

Thank you for your reply! What accreditation am I looking for? Yes ideally just want the certificate so I can work from home, and for the insurance. But then I'm thinking I should really learn about nails properly, conditions etc. Been researching different tips for different nails etc so can maybe self teach with this again. Not sure what kind of course to do really, maybe a home course would be enough? I'm so confused lol x

Oh really? I didn't know this. Would it not be classed as a second job? I used to be self employed cake maker/decorator and did that "on the side" of my normal day job, was registered though.

Ah now, 'on the side' means working illegally, if you want it as a 2nd job that's fine. But you'll still need quality training or it'll be a case of another mediocre qualification in an already overflowing sea x

Oh phew! That's ok then. Do you think day courses would be good enough? X

For L&P or Gel enhancements, without a doubt no. For Shellac or Gel Polish one or 2 days should suffice depending on level of training, pre study etc. If it's a class that takes complete beginners and passes them after a few hours I'd steer well clear.

I know they're expensive but you get what you pay for, there are a huge amount of courses ranging from absolutely abysmal to superb, choose wisely. If you can't afford it now, save. You'll only end up retraining in the future and spending even more money if you choose a poor course now x

Yeah thats very true, have seen some ones that I think look very good so will definitely have to save for though. Won't tell the husband though lol. Thank you so much for your advice x

I know courses are expensive but if you are going to do it in the long run it will definitely pay off. I decided to go for CND Shellac Beginners as it supposed to be amazing training and it includes in the price lamp, shellac and a lot of essentials needed to get started. After my course I plan to spend extra £150 to buy more colours of shellac and whatever I will earn by doing people's gel manicures I will put aside for my next course. I think that getting good training will let me avoid a lot of mistakes when doing nails and save me time and money as less complaints/repairs means more time to do nails/more money. I know husbands can be a bit of pain in the a*** when comes to spending money on "girly" stuff that they don't consider essential but it's worth talking about it. Mine said it's great but I need to promise him I will stick with it and not give up after the first hurdle.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do[emoji8]

You cannot work on other people without the proper training from a school. No matter how much you think you can learn on your own, you can't learn it all. Education is so important when wanting to work on the publics nails (or anyones)

So what i would recommend is to NOT enroll with any of the schools you see advertising on television, i would look for small local cosmo Schools and find out if they offer a nails course, which most do and its usually a lot less expensive than Tv advertised schools, and more thorough (which if you plan to work on the public is a very good investment)

I actually teach at a school and we have girls come in all the time who think "I've been working in the field ** years without a license, there's nothing i need to learn" and they're wrong, i can't stress enough how important an education is. If you don't think it's worth the investment than it may not be what you truly love and want to do.

Hiya as you are in Kent check out Denise Wright in Hartley (near blue water) and also sweet squared offer training at a salon in sittingbourne.
