Hi there (i really hope this is the right thread, if not, i'm sorry!)

I recently finished a diploma in manicures, pedicures and UV Gel extensions. I am currently working part time in my dream job at a doggy day care centre (i know, totally random, and really doesn't go well with nails and beauty), but I need to earn more money and nails is the route I want to take. However, I just don't feel brave enough! I'm not interested in working in a salon as i'm frightened that the environment is going to be bitchy and awful - having to deal with bit of a bully in my last job is what's made me want to work for myself in the first place.

I was just wondering, are these nerves normal - or am I just not cut out for it? I'm happy with manicures and pedicures but my french tips etc do need a bit of practise, but i'm not so happy with the extensions. I was going to leave those for a while, while I built up my confidence in the other areas first.

My parents are always on my head and are less than supportive so it's giving me more of a fright if it doesn't work out - they're also pressuring me to move out of home (i'm 19), and I know that building up a clientele isn't going to happen over night.

I'd appreciate any tips you guys may have that you may have known when you first started - or wish someone had told you!

Thank you :)

It's only natural to have a bit of a confidence crisis, it isn't necessarily a bad thing, it shows you care about what you are doing.

I know there are a few local nail places near me that take on people in training or recently qualified, it is on a reduced rate and usually evenings, but something like that would be a great way to boost your confidence but also have some backup and advice to fall back on if you need it. Obviously you need to find a reputable salon.

Get practicing on friends and family. If you are only part time at the dog day care place, maybe even ask if you could approach some of the owners and build up a small Client base that way.

Parents always go on about moving out, a lot of the time it's to try and spur their kids on. Maybe they think that you have done this course and are now not doing anything with it? I would say that if you love working with the dogs and it's part time it puts you in a great position. You have at least some sort of guaranteed income which isn't taking up all your time and so frees you up to start making progress with your nails.

Good luck, everything is a bit scary to start with. As for bullying people will only treat you how you allow them to treat you, you will come accross bitchy people in all walks of life, from my experience the animal world is the most bitchy of the lot so if you are coping with that then you'll be fine  Try not to worry about things that might not even be a problem, easier said than done I know!

Yes, of course it's normal to feel like this!! I felt so so anxious before I did my first set but I think the anticipation of doing it makes it worse. Its best to bite the bullet & get it over & done with! I started out by advertising on facebook for models & charging £15 & stating I was practising. I had loads of people & now Im much more confident. Good luck!
