Hi I've been employed for 7years at the same salon and qualified 5years and my boss has asked all of us to go self employed I'm based in a small city (which is more like a town) we are having our meeting Thursday to talk about costs etc.
Can anyone advise me on questions to ask?..
Also may I ask if anyone is doing well out of renting a chair? And is it better than being employed and why?
Do any of you get payment breaks for holiday (time off work)?
Much appreciated :)

I rented a chair for years before i got a salon, and i would again if i sold my salon. You can make alot more money if your a good stylist and are busy.most salons do 50/50 split with all bills and products/equipment includud.Good luck.xx:green:

I am a colour tech, in the first few months of being freelance within a salon. I take 30% of what I make my employer-I believe with cutting the % would be higher, my 'boss' (I am technically self employed) needs to filter in her colour cost.

You would need to put a bit away for at and national insurance which is worth thinking about, but it's pretty simple and you should keep travel receipts (train-petrol) as you may be able to claim some back, clothing and equipment to!

It's new to me and I am in a brand new salon so building up swiftly, as you have been there for a while and if you have a good client base it can be very profitable. I dont get holiday pay but my hours are my own and because I am working for myself she is very flexible, which works well for me as I am 8 months pregnant.

Hope this helps! X

Hi. i was employed but now do 50/50. i think its better than paying out a weekly rent as if you go on holiday you dont have to pay rent and if you have a quiet week you will still get a little wage rather than paying it all out in rent.

P.S it's also and incentive to get clients rebooking and recommending because they really do pay your wages :)

Hi thanks for all your replays in pretty set I want to do it, just need to see what the charges are, I have a good client base and at the moment I do hair pretty much ever evening till like 9pm so looking forward to not doing that anymore!
I done some research and around my area most places are charging £200 a week so I'm hoping to pay £250 a week just for the chair and buy my own stuff as this I think will be best for me! But il have to wait and see.
Luckily my best friends a qualified accountant do she's helping me as I have no idea :s
