Hello! I'm Courtney and currently a senior in high school. I have my senior research paper this semester and the topic is to pick a career you wish to do. I have a few questions that I would love to have answer since it will be very useful for my paper. :)
Here are the questions:

• What do you love most about your job?
• What do you least like about your job?
• What is your typical day like?
• What personal qualities does a person need to be successful in this occupation?
• What training and/or education did you need?
• After being trained how long did it take you to get a job?
• How long have you been in this occupation?
• Why did you pick this occupation?
• What is the outlook for this occupation?
• Any comments or other information you would like to add.

Thank you!

Here is a post I wrote for the site years ago. I haven't changed my mind about any of it.

There is more to being a great nail technician than just being able to turn out good nails (although this is very important). Here are a few thing to think about.

:!: Doing nails is not for the timid personality or the faint hearted ... you need to be able to be strong and firm with people.

:!: Doing nails needs a person with an empathetic nature, one who cares for and about people.

:!: Doing nails is a business, and a good business head is essential if you want to be financially successful.

:!: Doing nails requires self sacrifice and a vocational attitude as you need to be there when and if your clients want you. Staying in late and going in early etc.

:!: Doing nails is not a fun little hobby ... it is a profession and should not be done by amateurs but only by professionals in the true sense of the word (look it up in the dictionary ... interesting).

:!: Doing nails requires a great sense of responsibility. We work on people's bodies. They trust us to work safely and to nurture and care for their natural nails while they are wearing nail enhancements.

:!: Doing nails requires integrity (as should everything) and good business ethics. Business ethics is something allot of newbie technicians know nothing about in the UK ... thinking they can use someone Else's good will ... work in a salon and then leave trying to poach business from the very salon that hired them and helped them in the first place.

:!: Doing nails is one of the greatest most fun and rewarding and satisfying businesses in the world. Enjoy your learning but realize that the learning process never stops. Regular classes are not only necessary, they also increase your average earnings and keep you motivated.

:!: Doing nails requires a building attitude where one is constantly adding skills and more expertise to the base of knowledge they have. Keeping up with product developments and latest services . We are Creative people .. we need this constant stimulation to stay excited.

Here are the questions:

• What do you love most about your job? The good feeling that I get from making another person feel good. The new & exciting methods and products that are released constantly in beauty therapy.
• What do you least like about your job?Clients that don't respect me or my business by not showing up for appointments and therapists that do not respect their business by cheapening their skills.
• What is your typical day like?Varied! I start early & finish late, as late as 10pm sometimes. I have to vary my skills, personality & manner regarding what treatment I'm doing. Be it relaxing or exciting for the client.
• What personal qualities does a person need to be successful in this occupation? Outgoing, empathic, a good listener, sense of humour, firmness, creativity.
• What training and/or education did you need?I trained initially for 3 years gaining Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 2, Nail Services NVQ Level 3 and Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 3 Diploma. My training has continued ever since.
• After being trained how long did it take you to get a job? I started working for myself whilst training and have never worked for anyone except myself.
• How long have you been in this occupation? Five years.
• Why did you pick this occupation? I had an interest in Beauty Therapy from being very young and wanted to make people feel great about themselves, relaxed and happier.
• What is the outlook for this occupation? It's never ending with the different treatments, ever growing industry and great educators.
• Any comments or other information you would like to add.
If you want something, believe and achieve in any element of your life.
