On Saturday a lad came in with his mum he was about 13 his hair was nearly on his collarbone she wanted him to have a 'mowhawk'bearing in mind I've never been trained in mens I'm pretty much self taught and especially this sort of style??so I asked a few questions n cut his hair the best I could she wasn't happy so I cut it shorter she still wasn't happy cut it again.........anyway she then decided she wanted him to have a grade1 on the sides he was happy with the cut I gave him n ge also didnt want his ears on show!!! I wasn't prepared to do it again cause I already thought I ****ed his hair up I didnt wanna make it worse I explained to the manager n she passed it on to other stylist...anyway the manager came in today shouting at me basicly saying I'm crap I should be able to do every cut n I shouldn't of done what I did she is threatening to sack me I think she wants me to leave iv only been here 3weeks I'm so upset please help xx

"She said I shouldnt have done what I did"
- what is she saying here. Does she mean not a grade 1? .

- The mum said grade 1 did u explain how short it is ? As if she knew what grade 1 is she would have known that her sons ears would have been on show?

-Do you have a probation trail period ? Or did she employ you straight away.

We all make mistakes we are human. If you were not comftable doing mens hair, your manger should be aware of this.

But no way should she be shouting at you, that is unprofessional and belittling to you. She should of had a meeting with you and discussed xx

Thanks for reply....Like I shouldn't of give the cut to the other stylist she said she has lost all confidence in me now.and thats why they got rid of the last stylist, yeah I explained everything to the mum but she was adamant she didn't care about what he wanted..I didn't have a trial I started straight away she is fully aware I'm only qualified in ladies n she knows how I feel about gents but I still do them everyone else has left happy!!!I don't wanna be here anymore and I thought my confidence was getting better ha :( xx

Was it the manager that shouted at you or salon owner?; Very unprofessional behaviour. If it was the manager, I would take this to the owner and explain your side of the story.

I do feel for you, these mothers eh who'd have em :).

You did the right thing passing the cut on, if you didn't feel confident enough to do it.

I dont think she can sack you if there was no probation period set up.

Don't let it knock your confidence, what about going on a gents cutting course ? We all have days now and then were you feel as if you can't do anything.

And no matter how much experience you have you will always be learning.

But she was totally out of order the way she spoke to you xx

Legally you don't have many rights after 3 weeks

What you could do is sit down with your manager and her what you feel confident in doing and what you need to build in.. Maybe ask her for a second chance and possibly do a training day once a week where you take a model in and practice your weakness areas.
Did you say in the interview your not 100% on gents?

She's the owner and manager!!!I'll try not to let it get to me but I was just getting confident again n for me it doesn't happen and I felt really confident n comfortable for the first time in like ever!!!lol yeah I'm gonna go on a course I think iv got the basics I can do a nice short back n sides!!!well so I think so.well I think she's trying to make me leave and the other stylist has been flagging me off n saying I wasn't confident at the hair up I did eventhough it was a trial n she's got like 20odd years experience I don't think the owner understands xx

She knew when she took you on that you were not confident in mens cuts.
So if she wanted someone that was 100% amazing at everything, she should have employed someone who was 100% at everything lol. (not saying your not lol just not gents)

Go in tomorrow and have a PRIVATE meeting with her, not in front of staff and talk to her about things. If she starts to yell just ask her to not speak to you like that.
I no jobs are hard to find at the minute but you don't need some one to be unprofessional xx

Good luck , let us no how u get on xx

Listen, if you want my opinion this is how it goes ! They are a group of customers (i guess that all of us had the chance to meet this type of customers), they are a group who go to the hairdressers just to make fun of him. I had some ladies (a few days ago) who were like, i do not like this, why don`t you cut more from here, leave that longer. They come to try some new haircutS and you are prepaired to offer only one. Just hold your position, tell the manager to go ***** herself and find yourself a better job. We all know that you can do it, you can do a men haircut even if you had`nt been trained to, but you can do it! Tell the manager that she`s an idiot and get on with your life in stead of loosing your condifence! You are good and no one has nothing to tell you !!! (excuse my english) !!!

Take care !

Yeah I know what you mean lol I'd love to tell her to stick it iv given her so many ideas like a facebook page for example and she just poo poos everything I say I'm not going to suggest anything anymore she's really anoyed me im going to look for another job and I'm so gutted I turned other salon down for this place!!! Just wish every client was perfect lol take care xx

Why did she take someone on who felt unsure with some cuts if what she really wants is an uber stylist?

Firstly, try and speak to her and calm the situation if (and it's an if) you wish to continue in that salon. If you don't wish to continue, start looking now while you still have work.

Secondly, maybe it would be a good idea to pro-actively tackle these weak areas. Men's hair courses, observe in a barbers on your day off, cutting courses would all help.
You need to get to a stage in your cutting that a style doesnt need to be taught to you, you know enought to be able to work out how to acheive it yourself.

Yeah I'm unsure on what to do now well salon wise but I might start looking no harm I suppose!yeah I will go in to the barbers up the road actually they always seem busy I enjoy watching and learning and I would love to be at that stage in my cutting n would love to learn more.watch this space thankyou for your advise xx

First thing about hairdressing... Your stuff will go walkies!! Get yourself a brush bag... Waist Scissor pouch.. And take them home every night! And your electricals if you have them, when its your day off the following day!!

AHHHHH this makes me sooooooooooooo angry it's like a form off bullying hunny, This is what makes people leave our industry hunny you seem too have made it plain too your boss that your gents cutting needed some fine tuning you never said ohh yes i can do any gent that walks through the door you did the exact right thing passing the client over too another stylist some times when communication breaks down between client and stylist thats the best thing too do, I feel you are right in seeking more training in this area and your employer should be encouraging this as stylists we all have our weak areas and we strive too improve all the while chin up and i hope this will all be resolved......
