hi,

Ive always been unsure of reflexology, one because i hate feet and hate having mine touched and two because i always thought it was a load of old twaddle........................ How wrong was I.

I went to my sister in laws for tea tonight and later on we got messing around with all her crystals, aromatherapy oils and massage couch. She told me to take my shoes off as she wanted to do my feet, she could tell i had problems down my right side from the lower back down, she was right!!

My foot rolls over on my right side and my ankle sits at a 90 degree angle when relaxed, this has caused my knee to dislocate several times and pop back of its own accord, my hip locks for no reason, i cant sit with my feet on the sofa without really bad pain and it has given me sciatica, to top all that off the sole on my right shoe always wears out within two weeks of buying a new pair because of the rolling on the side of the foot.

I was amazed she could tell all of this just by my feet, i will be going back for more but its a little scary because she told me my right lung is in bad condition (smoking) i wonder what she will find next time, has anyone else experienced this?

phew that was long lol xx

Sorry to be scheptical as you had a lovely experience with and it can be relaxing to have your feet massaged in this way, this however she is your sister in law and will therefore know that you smoke and also that you have problems with your hip and knee which will always cause probs in your back (I have knee problems myself).

I studied Reflexology and we were told NEVER to diagnose with it as with all beauty/alternative therapys if you feel there is something wrong with a client you should direct them towards a doctor rather than tell them there is "something wrong with their lung" this could seriously scare someone. I know someone who had a reflexolgist tell them they would have problems conceiving. Instead of seeing a specialist to check them out they immediately tried to get pregnant (before they wanted a child) out of fear that it may never happen for them. They got pregnant immediately!

When I practiced reflexology myself clients tried to use me as some kind of medical diagnostic tool! If I told them what part of the body the part of the foot I found had problems related to they ALWAYS said "oh that's strange as that part had an injury 3 yrs ago/I bumped that last week/I get migranes" When I was training I got the bits that they were meant to relate to WRONG a few times and even then they had an anecdotal connection with that body part!!! Just like when some people visit psychics!!!

Glad she made you feel good but be aware of the other side of things

I agree with this, reflexology can be lovely and very relaxing. However it is not your sister in laws place to diagnose any condition. If it were that easy to see if someone has a lung condition then there wouldn't be any need for tests etc,the specialist would just look at the feet..Also,hate to say but quite often you can tell someone has a problem with their knees, back or hips by looking at their feet because they have a build up of hard skin on one foot or a particular area where for instance the bodies weight isn't evenly distributed over the feet.Glad you enjoyed the treatment though and I know of a lot of people that truely believe in the benefits of reflexology treatments.  l

Sally's do a one day Indian head course.I did that but ended up going to college as I found I wanted a bit longer to get used to the moves etc.I love doing Indian head massage, should be very relaxing and quite often the client will fall asleep. It's relaxing for the therapist as well.Maybe try somewhere else and hopefully you will enjoy your treatment a bit more.

Head massage when done properly is amazing :)

Once again I trained in "Indian head massage" (Champissage) but practice "Head massage" as Indian head massage is based on belief in Indian derived Chakras (of which I personally don't believe) and releasing energy blockages just as Reflexology is based on a generally Chinese belief in Chi/Qi/Life force energy and that these blockages can be released along these channels to premote health throughout the body (once again I don't personally believe but have a lot of Japanese friends who do so I respect the choice of the individual.)

Scientists and medics see these practices as Pseudoscience and I'm not convinced all of those who practice these techniques really know the history of these practices.

Enjoy exploring :)

someone come and rub my head!!! lol.:Grope: oh thats my bum!

Hee hee!

hi,

my sis in law never knew of the problems i have as i have never told her before, she didnt "diagnose" me as such, and she did tell me to see my gp as soon as i get back from america. I will go back for more, although i dont find it relaxing just interesting lol.

i did a reflexology course and i was taught that you can tell the client what problems you might find, even problems with the lung, but you do tell them to see a GP,you dont diagnose a problem like a doctor would, you just say what problems you think the client has.

Sorry but if you are telling someone they have a medical condition,i.e a lung condition then that is diagnosing. We are not medically qualified therefor we should certainly not be telling people they have a lung condition or any other medical condition.I think we need to be very careful here with not stepping over our boundaries,I know what you mean about saying what you think the clients problems are but lung problems!!!!When I carry out a massage if I discover a swelling I will usually ask them if they have sustained any injuries, then I will tell them they have a swelling and suggest they visit a doctor,I would never say what I thought it was because as I said I am not medically qualified.Telling someone that their lung is in bad condition could cause no end of worry.xx

When I perform a reflexology treatment I always feedback to the client on any 'imbalances' found and in what area. Often the client will recognise a problem they've had for a while and then feedback to you that 'yes, they've had back/shoulder problems for a while' but haven't thought much about it so fail to tell you at consultation..
Telling a client where you found an imbalance is NOT diagnosing. There may be several causes for the percieved imbalance including wearing wrong footwear, sports, rough yoga mats etc. The client can usually pinpoint such things.
I do think its important to make a client understand that just because an area is imbalanced one week doesnt necessarily mean the imbalance will be there the following week. I don't think you should ever panic a client, however, any good therapist should send the client to his/her GP if they have any genuine concerns about the clients health.
As for whether it works or not I guess its horses for courses. Personally I love it. Two minutes into the treatment I'm away with the fairies. I think its helpful to any condition which is exacerbated by stress ( blood pressure, IBS, fertilitiy issues, Insomnia, etc).
Having studied reflexology solely as an extra service to offer and not really believeing in it I have now totally switched my opinion.
Studies have been done on holistic therapies and have shown definite chemical changes going on in the receiver's brain when receiving treatment so something is definitely happening.
One stressed out client referred to reflexology as 'enforced relaxation', something we could probably all do with from time to time.:)

I use reflexology all the time. Especially on my 8 year old son. When he was born he had to have a collostomy bag fitted.

He doesn't have it any more but it has left him with a really lazy bowel. Sometimes he can go a week without going for a poo.... so I did a course of treatments on him, whilst I was training, I was very sceptic to start with. But as soon as I treat my son, I can say everytime he's been for a poo within 20 minutes........

It doesn't mean it would work for everyone, but by stimulating the small intestine the colon area of his foot it certainly works for him.
