Ok so I am a onwer of a salon I own the shop and I am also a hairdresser I have 6 girls that rent my space ... two nails tech 3 hairdressers and the rest beauty girls they all pay me weekly rent .... BUT I advertise for me most of the time because it my shop the nail lady’s and the beauty girls but my hairdresser I don’t because I see them as a threat I always said when I took hairdresser on they must have a clientele and not taking my clients .... because at the end of the day I still have room for more clients .... now one of my hairdresser has asked can I advertise some of her work and she will pay me rent and give me percentage of what she makes .... I am abit stuck what to do can anyone help me ?? And ways of self employed roles ??

Sounds like the hairdresser is confused by what being ‘self employed’ means.
She needs to advertise her own business within your salon so she could put a poster in your window, design a website or Facebook page, hand out flyers with price lists to the public etc.
She can also choose to run special offers so if your clients choose to book in with her, they legally become her clients and she has to keep her own client records.

She does she has her own page own price lists but she wants me to advertise her aswell but I am worried that she might steal clients ... I just want some advice what other salons do with self employed people

In that case, I’d tell her firmly NO as you’re running your own business and column.

I think if you start getting directly involved in advertising ‘her business’ within your salon, you start to blur the line between employed and self employed and long term, that’s not benefiting you at all.

So would you say no ? She was saying she would give me a percentage if I got people in for her

How is that going to work in practice?
Will she give you a percentage from all her clients or just the ones who you personally book in with her?
How will it affect the other 2 hairdressers?
I’d be very wary and I can’t help thinking that you risk creating a bad atmosphere within the salon with an ‘us’ and ‘them’ divide if you’re seen to be actively involved in building up her business, possibly to their detriment. I know they’re not your staff but I strongly believe that you should never be seen to have favourites and give preferential treatment to one person as it always leads to resentment and conflict.

I rent a room in a salon as a self employed therapist I have access to the Facebook page and can regularly post updates, Special Offers etc the woman I rent the room from knows as a business person I am making improvements and bringing in business as it’s all done under her shop name. If you did it for one hairdresser I think you would need to offer the same opportunity to them all to keep everything fair. Good luck with whatever you decide

I rent a station in a Hair and nail salon, the owner will happily fill my book for me and I will for her, she doesn’t see me as a threat because she’s got over 10 years experience so has her own clients and we both make sure we ask when people book in who they would like. That way there’s not client stealing, I’ve even let her do my clients if I’m over booked, we both use a salon page and I have my own personally page. If people are still scared there going to loose clients then there obviously doing something wrong if they think there clients will go to someone else.

This is exactly how I work and if I’m on hols or vice versa clients are happy to be fitted in with my self employed stylist. I happily share her work and any spare availability on the salons social media channels.
It creates a nice friendly salon environment where clients feel welcome and enjoy a catch up with both of us when they visit. I always make sure I am booked as much as I need to be then will happily book clients with my s.e stylist. It gives me a bit of breathing space after a year of literally no time off and I don’t feel threatened by her. To be honest if clients preferred her to do their hair then me, that’s life, it wouldn’t be the end of the world! I would rather her be busy cos if she isn’t earning enough working alongside me then she will look elsewhere to work which I don’t want, so I make sure all appointment requests are allocated fairly and she doesn’t have a wasted journey in.
It’s a shame to feel threatened by your team, if you create a nice environment for everyone to work in then they won’t want to leave and possibly poach salon clients.
