Hi Hair Geeks, I am from Skin & Nails, but need some advice for my daughter. She had her hair coloured (high lift tint) on Friday evening, was supposed to be highlights, but it seems the hairdresser persuaded her to have the top section dyed instead! Anyway, she got up Saturday saying her scalp was itch and hurting.... She has major patches of burns and scabs on her head. Apart from the obvious, Doctor, can you please advise me what I can do??

She is going back to the hairdressers after visiting the Doctor today. Is there advise you can give me with what she should be saying??

thank you for your advise in advance - its much appreciated
Fiona

Milk will soothe the scalp.

Apart from that, just visit your GP.

But in the meantime, milk will help coole the burns.

In regards to what she should say to the hairdresser, I would expect they may give her some treatments for her hair- to cool down the burns. But, in all honesty, there is not much they can do. The damage is done to her scalp now.

(Im sorry that sounds very blunt and to the point. I didnt know how else to phrase it.)

Hope she feels better soon xx

Beautiquehair - thanks for your prompt reply! She's off to doctors now! Just worried about her hair falling out or ending up with damaged follicles! ! She's only 17 but thinks she knows it all LOL!! I told her not to go to that particular salon but she ignored my judgement :(

Did they do a skin sensitivity test? Could be she has also had a reaction?

I was exactly the same at 17! Infact, im exactly the same now! Even with all of my knowledge, I still dye it every 3-4 weeks a completely different colour.

Hopefully she will learn for future now. Sometimes it takes something sudden to happen before people learn.

Any reputable salon would offer to give some treatments to help soothe the scalp. Ive never had this happen personally, and, I think all you could do was offer some follow up conditioning treatments for the hair.

I'd check to see if she had a skin test prior to the treatment?

I'd be interested to know what they have said to your daughter.

Will keep checking back :)

So been to the doctors, she has burnt through 3 layers of skin. Got an infection too. My daughter has been to the hair salon, the four girls stood around her - intimidating - and said it happens to lots of clients!!! Next time we'll just do highlights!! Like I am going to ever let them touch her again!!

Sorry stupid phone sent before I was ready!!
They didn't test her. As a BT each change of treatment that could in anyway have a reaction I always test to cover myself!! Even when opening a new tint just in case the ingredients have changed or client has forgotten to tell me that her meds have changed etc. They haven't got her to sign anything remotely like a care card!! How brazen can they be!!! No apology, no calming treatment etc, but that would be accepting liability I suppose!!
I am livid!! Will be making a visit later - any advice will be gladly recieved!!

She may have NOT had an allergic reaction but may have BLEACH burns if bleach was used. If tint was used it could be an allergic reaction. The salon should offer treatments etc. find out if she had a patch test. Poor love xx

Sorry just re read post hi lift tint may have caused reaction, some naughty hairdressers sprinkle bleach in, not saying this has happened but it would burn more with this xx

I think they put bleach in the tint to hurry it along. Friday evening & they want to go home! (Bearing in mind she is a natural blonde anyway). Don't think I will get very far with them tbh, and sueing them I would imagine is very difficult!!! But a phone call to their insurance broker might be the ticket??

Either way they have done something seriously wrong along the way.

1) Not skin testing her is awful. Although, unfortunately, there are a few salons that will not skin test- for whatever reasons they claim are acceptable.

2) You do have legal grounds, and, if she has burnt three layers of skin, I would suggest you maybe persue the legal route. I would advise you find out if the person who completed her hair was fully qualified? If not, were they being overseen by another senior member of staff completing the service??

3) You will find, as with beauty insurance I would expect, insurance payouts usually happen because the insurers find it the quick and easy route to just pay out- not from experience, but from what ive seen on other posts on here. So you may find that route an option. I would personally first threaten the salon with an insurance claim. The fact that you are going to blacken their name slightly will worry them enough.

4) This does NOT happen to lots of clients. It has never happened to me! A reputable and good salon, would not have this happen if they skin test people!

.... Whatever happens, make sure you get some type of compensation!
Even just the bloody money back for the service would be a start! Although, not suffice.

Hope you get sorted xx
