semi permanent colour on highlights

hello hair geeks....

my question is, can i put a semi permanent colour on highlighted hair. Hair was last highlighted 5 weeks ago and at the stage where i have dark roots appearing. cant afford to keep getting highlights so hoping to do a bit of d.i.y.
If it is possible, any advice on the best products to use and if i need to go for a darker shade than my usual blonde???
