I know that a client is meant to shave or wax 24hrs prior to a spray tan. However, if a client has forgotten and will shave when gets home from work, 1hr prior to the spray tan, how will this affect the tan?

There are many things that may happen.

The main ones are that the moisturising strip on the razor will leave a film over the skin creating streaky legs and the pores will be open and the tan will go into them and then give tan spots (tanned spots all over the legs in the pores and it looks awful).

I agree with Baggybear, I had a client recently who decided to shave just before I got there even though she had been told 24hrs etc. I had travelled 10 miles and didn't want to leave to come back another day so I told her to get back in the shower and scrub her legs like mad. I tanned her and fortunately her boyfriend asked me if I could tan him too. Due to time constraints I had to see him the next day which worked out really well for the girlfriend as her legs were mega streaky. I could actually see the lines where the razor had been even though she scrubed and had tried to exfoliate the shaving moisturizers off.

It is very important to follow the pre-tan advice. If they forgot to shave I would advise them to leave it until after the tan and then shave the next day using a brand spanking new blade and a lot of shaving gel or lubricant to minimize the exfoliating action of shaving. Rather slightly paler legs than streaky ones with huge tan spots ( like big fat freckles where the solution pools in the pores).

If she has already done it and you have sprayed her then the best thing in my opinion is to gently exfoliate any streaks and put loads of body bronzer powder on the legs for the night out or special occasion. At least it will look even and fabulous for that special event.
