Can I just say, I'm a nail geek, but wondered if anyone could comment on this please?

I have long straight hair just above my bra strap, I normally wear it up in a boring ponytail because I don't get time to straighten it, and it gets very fly away. I prefer having it down though.

Someone a while back said, have it cut shorter, because as you get older your hair should get shorter! Is this common knowledge?

I'm toying with the idea of a graduated bob, short into my neck coming down to just below my jaw line, WITH a fringe, which I haven't had for about 20yrs lol. I'm 42.

I'm scared though, have always been scared of the hairdressers lol, rather go to the dentist. I think I want to give it a go, but am worried sick I'll hate it.

Shorter as you get older?....

thanks x

Why is it everyone wants you to get your hair cut when its long?! My hair is down to my waist and everyone always tells me that I'll have to get it cut when I'm older:cry:. I'm 24. I don't see why, there are some beautiful older women with longer hair. Do what you would like not what someone else suggests

well I like having long straight hair, and someone suggested this bob type cut, I dismissed it, but haven't been able to stop thinking about it since lol. Think it will look a lot edgier ;) I think I could be having a mid life crisis lol :green:.

I also colour my hair, as without it, it would be white, I seemed to have bypassed the grey and gone straight to white

I've had short hair most of my life, I'm 42 now. Was very short n funky in my 20's and when I got to late 30's I decided to grow a bob, which started graduated then eventually got to below chin length all over. I got fed up as my hair is very fine and I always end up tucking it behind my ears so got it cut short again, long layers at front so it almost looked like a choppy bob but cut shorter at back. I thought I'd prefer it having been use to having it so short in the past, but I didn't and could't wait to grow it out. Now it's a very short graduated bob and I think I'm happy with it! But yeah there does seem to be some sort of idea that short hair looks better when you're older. I'm on the fence, sometimes short hair can look too severe on mature people.

ps. I also cut my fringe when I had my bob and HATED it with a passion, I'm currently trying to grow it out. What about trying out some wigs??

:)

I never thought of wigs. Wonder if theres any kind of software where i can super impose my photo onto different hair styles lol.

This is the kind of thing I was thinking of:

Dunno how she gets it to stick out like that at the back, think mine would fall flat, its quite fine but VERY thick.

She just has it cut that way plus it is a pro blow dry.
Remember hair grows so if you try it and don't like it it is not forever.
Personally I am not a fan of long coloured hair on mature ladies as it has to be impeccably groomed to look good.

I think the thinking from years ago was the older we get, the shorter our hair should be. Personally, I feel this is outdated thinking.

I read a book by Charla Krupp, "How Not to Look Old", and she recommends that we have longer hair (shoulder length) after the age of 40. I've done some of her recommendations and it's true, you do look younger.

I'm 54 and most folks think I'm in my early 40's. :)

I want to do it, but won't/daren't until I find a wig to try lol

thanks x

I am nearly forty and had this conversation with my husband after seeing Liz McDonald on Corrie, have a real bad long hair day, decided to get a shoulder length cut and people say i look younger xxxx:)

Try this site .

*Daily Makeover, MSN Life and Style - MSN UK

You can upload a photo of you and play around as much as you like trying on different hairstyles/ colours lengths plus make up etc . Very addictive :)

Take a hint from me though and take a pic of yourself with hair tied right back off your face and do not wear any make up

If, like me you uploaded a pic of yourself with long hair and then try on a short hairstyle your long hair still shows LOL - Hope that makes sense .Enjoy

I think it depends on your face shape, and how old you actualy look, I know a lady who is 40 and another who is 43 and they have definatlly looked after themselves, and look in about 30 they both have lovely long hair and look stunning. However I know some ladies who are 40 odd and have not weathered so well and look alot older! Maby you should go in for a consultation, and have the hairdresser see what she thinks, I dont think that straight one length hair looks good on anyone apart for girls say under 25 who are model like, becuase its not the most flattering style. But its your hair, so how you have it cut is up to you. I think you should go in and have a chat, maby have somelength off and style, and when it comes to needing it cut again, which when you have a fringe etc, it will need doing again quiet soon so you can then take the plunge or decide to grow it back. x

I'm going to try that site, thanks. Most piccies are with my hair tied back ;) will have a go and see.

Actually a friend yesterday said, go for it, it'll suit your face shape. I just looked in the mirror and asked my 6yr old daughter, "what shape is my face" Her reply.... the same shape as mine lolol

It's not round, maybe oval, its longish, oh I don't know how to tell :D

Do I look my age? I see every line and wrinkle but I guess people do say I look in my mid to late 30's (me thinks they lie ;) I definately don't act my age ;) I'm not in twinsets n pearls, more baseballs shoes, combats, or jeans lol.

I'm really trying to talk myself into this, off to see that site.

thanks again x

A good way to work out your face shape- Stand in front of a mirror, facing it straight on, with your hair tied back off your face. Take a lipstick/lipliner/eyeliner, and draw round the edge of your face onto the mirror. When you stand back you'll be able to see a lot more clearly what your face shape is.

I agree with sarahpoppy, you need to go in for a consultation with a good hairdresser, they will be able to recommend some styles that will suit you, your lifestyle and hair type. But I do think that just because you're past 40, doesn't mean that you HAVE to have shorter hair. Look at Jerry Hall! It's a personal choice. I choose to have short hair because it suits me better. Jerry Hall chooses to have long hair because it suits her. Go for what suits you and what you're happy with.

I recently had my hair cut short and regret it, just wish it would grow out quickly. I had it short as I colour it, as not ready to be grey yet. Thought if it was short it would be easier to colour.

I think it makes me look older now though. I would say do it gradually, the bob in the pic looks lovely and if you didn't like it then it would grow out. You can always go shorter but don't do what I did and go very short and then pray hard at night that it will grow during the night lol.

I also think it is an outdated way of thinking that once you reached a certain age you have to have long hair cut off.

I had mega short hair for ears due to job requirement so when I changed direction and went into the beauty business I grew my hair, it is now nearer butt than bra strap.

I wear it either up if I am working or running around and poker straight if I go out. It's very blonde and I think quite nice but I get the comments from friends like oh you'll need to get it cut and why do you have it so long. I actually think some of it is jealousy as I do get loads of nice comments from strangers when it is done and I know one of my "friends" doesn't like the attention it gets!

So I would just say just do what the heck you want and to pot with everyone else:green:.
