Hello Everyone,

I have a client who has a split in one of her nails. It goes too far down to just file and then have it 'grow out', as she has had this for many years now and has just put up with it. The split actually grows with the nail, so filing the nail does nothing but shorten the length of the split, and she would like a solution from me on what I can suggest for her.

I can get a photo later to show what I mean, but is there anything that anyone can recommend?
I have purchased IBX, and have started this treatment with my client, and she has had one application of this so far.
Is there anything else anyone can recommend, as IBX is a slow progress, and gel polish will not last as long on this finger?

I know there isn't much information to go on, so I will get a photo later to show what the issue is.

Thank you

Lydia

You could use ibx and then silk on the gel polish base coat over the split. This works a treat

A silk wrap with gel overlay

Minx colour coat if S2 still do them. No need to soak off either.

The main reason I got into nails was because I've been suffering from the same splitting issue on 2 nails for a couple of years and wanted to learn how to cope and like yourself started with IBX but with mixed results. I do believe this did help in a big way as it kept the split on the free edge together thus stopping the split travelling down the nail with each strain to the nail. However, I do recommend that you can get some proper tuition on how to apply the IBX rather than just following what's written in the instructions.

Splitting as you know is generally down to a damaged matrix from and impact or even an infection. I'm lucky enough that the matrix's are starting to recover on my nails but it's only down to constant monitoring. Maybe you could do the 9 nails in gel and the splitting nail (after IBX) with a matching normal lacquer so that your client can keep on top of it themselves. I found that I had to replace the varnish on mine every 4-5 days to make sure the nail had the best chance of recovery. I also made sure to oil the cuticle regularly and massage the nail fold gently each time.

This was just my own findings from my own problem so apologies for it not being technical. The main thing for me was to protect to split as best I could then allow the split to grow out naturally.

You can try seal and protect by magnetic.
It help my nails! Recently I started to use this product on my clients. Its very good for protectng the natural nail in the long run.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I will have a chat with her and decide on the best solution. It's very disheartening sometimes, as I am still only recently qualified, and I feel like I should have an instant answer and solution for her (which I know is not always possible).

She has said to me that she has had this issue for years and has never tried to find a fix for it. It's not even like it can just grow out either, as it has always grown with her nail, and not out of the nail if you understand what I am trying to say.

Hopefully, we can try and find the best thing for us to do :)

Thank you for the suggestion. Where could I get this from? Can I use it under gel polish?

I have a client with this same problem - her nail has been like this for years. And the split means she often catches it which makes it sore. I've tried various things and the best for her has been a thin layer of acrylic - the whole nail is therefore covered and protected and she no longer catches it. She has gel polish on her nails so each visit I just file the gel colour off that nail, Infill the acrylic and reapply her new chosen colour. She says it's changed her life! She can now wash her hair without getting strands caught in it! xx
