Hi hair Geeks,
I'm wondering if the adverts for the split end shampoos that have recently appeared on tv (Pantene & Herbal Essences I think) have any truth to them.

Can you really fix split ends or do they need cutting off and then look after the hair by hydrating it with a good moisturising shampoo & conditioner to prevent split ends?

What shampoo would you recommend for someone with coloured hair with a few split ends?

Given that both brands you mentioned are made by P&G, I'd hate to think of all the nasty animal tests that went on to perfect them! http://www.hurtfulessences.org/

I am not specifically interested in those particular brands Ruth just that lately there have been several new split end shampoos advertised on the tv (I think those 2 brands were the ones I saw - but I don't pay too much attention to adverts lol), I want to know if the claims that shampoos & conditioners can fix/repair split ends are true or not.

I don't use either brand as I disagree with animal testing.

I have always called split ends 'dead ends' as I was under the impression that there is nothing that can be done other than cut them off and moisturise the hair to try and stop more from coming. I wanted to know if there are shampoos that can do what the adverts say and if so what ones would the hair geeks recommend.

Ah that's OK... sorry if it sounded as though I was accusing you of using them... I guess lots of people don't know about the animal testing that goes on behind the scenes, as they just see the airbrushed adverts on the telly...

Every ingredient has been tested on animals before use on humans fyi. Please don't think by saying this i condone it, i do not, I have been vegetarian for 18 years because i don't believe in using animals in such ways.

I know what you mean Ruth, I didn't take an offence or read any accusations into your post so no worries :).

I'm just wondering if there is any truth to the claims made about fixing split ends on the adverts, I only noticed the advert because my 4 year old daughter said 'that woman has got nice hair' lol. I just switch off when the adverts come on tv.

as far as i know these products just smooth the hair down, so it appears to have been mended but infact it just coats them with a temporary sealant..............
please correct me if im wrong other hair geeks!!!

Silicone!!!! Lovely stuff to have on your hair :) no they don't work only disguise them as previously said. If you have damaged ends though try Redken extreme Anti snap! Brill stuff!!!

Thank you for the recommendation. I don't have split ends at the moment but do get them. I book myself in for a trim when I see that I have a few but if there is a shampoo that will really help to stop/fix them then I will happily pay for that.

If PIP hadn't gone bust, they'd be putting split end shampoo into their implants next!

I don't usually give those products the time of day so I couldn't really say. When I started my hairdressing training I converted to the better products on offer (you know like tigi, wella etc) and I always chop my split ends off!
