Hi, Thanks for all the replies,

As promised I've just phoned my insurance company (Salon Gold) and they told me that I have to follow the recommendations of my spray tan supplier.... so I phoned Sienna X and they advise a 24hr patch test under the following circumstances;

  • If your client has not had a spray tan before
  • has sensitive skin
  • has had a reaction from self tanning products in the past
I intend to put those three lines onto my client record cards and if anyone answers yes to any of them then they're gonna have a 24hr patch test:)

I really advise anybody in doubt to contact their insurance companies to find out their policies on this.... best to be safe than sorry

Jes

As a apraytan provider we to would advocate a patch test 24hrs before application however it is advisable to check the specific requirements with your insurance provider.

As part of a responsible "risk assesment" scenario and for those mobile theropists if it simply is not pheasable to do the patch test 24hr prior it is better to do the test half an hr before application (I.E. immediatley as you arrive to your customers home) than not to do the test at all.

Again...check this with your insurers just to be on the safe side

Oh and Jes you might want to think about adding a further bullet point .....pregnant females

Thats what I already ask on my client record cards and if anyone did say they had a reaction to self tanning products in the past I would automatically do a patch test but I havent been doing tests for all new clients, especially as most of them have had tans of some kind or another previously.

If Salon Gold say that it has to be done 24hrs before then that is going to cause problems in some cases too, i.e "i'm going out tomorrow night, sorry its last minute but can you do a tan for me today??" If I said I couldn't because I have to patch test 24hrs before then they would go elsewhere.... wonder how many people would lose the customer to the salon up the road rather than take the chance??

Hi Sherrie,

I know what you mean but I dare not do any treatments without insurance. I did some Googling and found a story about someone who weren't given a patch test and then had a bad reaction... they're suing!

I plan to write into all my advertising, price lists, flyers, etc that a 24 hour patch test may be needed for spray tanning. Hopefully this will get the message to the majority of my clients before they arrive at the salon.

This has been very interesting to read. Having only just done my course patch testing wasn't really spoken about in any sort of detail. I was just wandering (maybe this is a stupid question) but when doing a patch test do you just dip ur finger in the solution and put it behind the clients ear???

At my training they told me that you dont need to patch test but check what your insurance say, when i got back from training i rang my insurance company and they said if your training provider said do a patch test then you must do one. its just like one big circle

Steep learning curve for me too and some good advice here. It's easy to take for granted that these products will be fine on everyone but there may the 1 in a 1000 that isn't and that could be very costly I guess!
The insurance that says do a 10 min test.... what if a reaction occurs after this, say an hour or two, what happens then?

Whoever you trained with has told you wrong:irked:. This is all about basic health and safety. When using any product/solution (not just spray tan solution) you have to follow the manufacturers instuctions/advice. If you're not following the safety instructions and something goes wrong then no insurance will cover you. Read the instructions on the MSDS of your solution and/or phone the manufacturer. Then phone your insurance company to see if they have any other requirements:)

I require a patch test for tan, lash Lifting and tinting. I have lost custom to the salon upthe Road who doesn't require a patch test. But I am ok with that. I am strict with these things because I'd rather lose a few quid than lose my livelihood altogether.
