There have been a few posts on the business forum concerning staffing issues, here are a few tips to improve communication and monitor performance within your salon.

It is essential to keep employees motivated and working efficiently as they represent your salon and consequently the image you are aiming to promote. No matter the size of the company having profitable, motivated employees is a must, it is essential to develop good relationships with employees and invest time in them. It is important that staff are well trained as this will motivate them to follow though any promotinal activity you launch in your salon, it will ensure you staff are well equipt to sell your products and services effectivley to clients. If you have a happy motivated workforce this will consequently improve customer service and will ensure everyone is working together in order to achieve the salon’s goals and objectives.

Having a salon software system will help you track the performance of staff members with the array of reports that will be produced. You will be easily be able to see what services each staff member has given and the products they have sold. This will enable you to compare which staff members are selling more retail products, those employees that are gaining repeat bookings and which employees are generating the most revenue. This information will allow you to give targeted incentives to staff to increase motivation and therefore productivity. Furthermore by assesing each staff members ability to sell and rebook clients it will enable you to establish which employees require further training, this will make sure you develop and maintain a talented and profitable workforce.

It is important to remember that the goal of performance management is to improve the effectiveness of employees; therefore it is essential to make reliable assessments and provide constructive feedback. This should consist of emphasising their strengths and highlighting their development needs. When you give feedback you need to be specific, for example what actions you like, what actions you don’t like, when this occurred and the effect of their actions etc. It is important to strike a balance between the positive and negative feedback as you do not want to upset or put your employees off. You should also give good reasons for why they need to change, and explain how their behaviour affects the business. Giving positive recognition is essential when giving feedback, this will make employees feel more satisfied and motivated in their jobs if they feel their work is being recognised and appreciated.

It would be a good idea to create a plan of how employees can improve and develop in your salon, don’t try and tackle every problem at once as it is better to make small progress rather than none at all. Creating monthly targets are also a way of improving performance as it not only creates objectives to work towards but they will help enhance staff relationships as it is an opportunity to come together at the end of every month, this is important as it can be difficult to get all employees together when they are all doing separate treatments in the salon.

One of the main factors that contributes to low productivity or lack lustre employees is the way that they were hired; the hiring process should begin with you mapping out a detailed job description followed by an advertisement of the position, assessment of the candidates, interviews, reference checks and finally a trial work period. If the hiring process is carried out effectively this should save you time and money as the candidates you recruit will be the top performers.

It is important to remember the influence that you, the salon owner has over the business, your actions will go a long way in making your employees feel comfortable and happier, creating a happier environment will help the company increase profits, increase productivity, decrease absenteeism and decrease turnover with the overall objective resulting in your employees enjoying coming to work.

I totally agree with you. I'm not a salon owner but from my experience we've previously had a person who was totally unmotivated and unsuited to the hairdressing industry. In a sense it was good to give everyone a go but as you mentioned it is better to have an effective hiring process with detailed assesments to see who is right for the job, thus saving time, money and effort!
