Hi Geeks,

I am nearly 30 looking to complete my hairdressing qualification. I started to train as a hairdresser when I left school but had to drop out for family reasons and have since gone on to train to be a PA and mortgage adviser. Hairdressing is something I had always wished I had gone back to and can honestly say I have a natural flair for. I am constantly cutting and styling friends hair and recently due to being more financially stable and having more free time I think I want to take the plunge and complete the NVQ so that I can become a mobile hairdresser.

I know the hairdressing courses at my local college have already started so I wondered if there was anything you think I could do in the meantime to get my skills up in time for the course next year? Any books I could read etc? I am going to see if I can get some more experience by continuing to do friends hair etc - are there any other tips you could give me?

Thanks SO much I really appreciate it xxx

Hi hun,

Are you going to do the course Full time or Part time?? You will most likely need a salon placement ( but i would phone the college to see what you need to do) to do your NVQ L2 so you could start by securing that.

Local libraries have NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing books that you could read to help with your theory.

You could get a head block to practice Hair up, in my first year we had a class competition for hair up, get used to plaiting, that was part of my NVQ 2 but i did do it a while ago.
Also practice winding perms, brick, spiral & Directional and the same with rollers, practice brushing out sets and knowing what to look for. Colour wise, find out what colours the college uses and get as much information on them as you can. Most brands have helplines you can call.
Practice foiling too to get your speed up, you will have set amount of time for each service.

Also i wouldn't think of going mobile until you have worked in a salon for a while, the amount of information you get from a salon will be invaluable, dont get me wrong some people go straight into mobile and thats great but with mobile it cant be trial and error, you have to know your business inside out cos one person will tell five its bad.

Good luck hun i think you will do great x x I work mobile now and i love it but i do miss the buzz of a salon x x

if you have already completed some training why not phone the college and see if you can get on the course now ? you wont have missed too much and if you are willing to catch up i am sure they will listen to you x

hiya , I am currently doing an adult course in hairdressing , vrq level 2 which is the first year of the NVQ and we have just had a lady start last week so it would be defiantly worth a call!

as for the lessons , we have 8 hours practical and 5 theory and I'm pretty sure that would be similar at other colleges too.

good luck !
xx

Are there any local colleges with January start dates?? When I went to college for hairdressing I was too late in applying for the August start and couldnt bear waiting another full year!!! If not there are some one day courses at wholesalers ie Salon Services, Capital etc.

Oh wow thanks SO much for you advice ladies, I am going to give them a call as I did half the course when I was 17 and remember it all as clear as day so I am sure I can just pick up where I left off and just brush up on previous experience. Thanks again and I will let you know what they say!
