tanning shops do they make money?

:rolleyes: I have a beauty and nail salon in leeds, Just thinking about adding 2 new 225 vertical sunbeds, has any one got a sunbed shop and can you possible make descent money from these beds and does it pay to have the weekly unlimited tanning offers for £12.00

Any advice would be great thanks

i wouldnt make it unlimited offers for a week, £12 is to cheap. people will take advantage, you will also have to change your bulbs more often (which are expensive). If clients take advantage of the offer it could do damage to there skin.

a friend of mine works in a sunbed shop and they do take a lot of money but i guess it depends of the area you live in ect....
 
I go to a sun bed shop near me and I pay £1 a minute and usually go for 15 minutes at a time. This would be brill if I lived near but I'm sure that the shop I go to would be losing money hand over fist.
I do spray tanning as a mobile service and this has also ben introduces to the shop where I go and and that certainly seems to be where the money is at the mo with all the bad press on sun beds.
 
Sunbeds can be a lucrative form of income if managed correctly... Although it took me some time to build clientele I did so by advocating safe tanning... Fully trained advisors... advantageous product ranges... no time limits on packages and certainly no unlimited use offers.

My customers pay more because I refuse to play competiton with express tanning salons (that seem to come and go quite quickly) and we provide an informed service putting the customer at ease...

I would shy away from offers from companies that want you to rent the machines or work on a profit share basis... and research the machines you are purchasing and how much the after maintenance is... some machines can cost from £1000+ to service and retube... You must build this cost into your projected profit analysis...

have you thought about having one or two sunbeds and an airport like st tropez offer or similar....loads of companies now offer spray tan booths....that way you have two new services which will bring the money in.
 
I know of 2 hairdressers nearby wh have recently got rid of theirs as thye were only just breaking even - but I guess it depends if you market it right. How about spray tannng? - people are becoming alot more aware of the damage sunbeds can do to your skin - worth a thought?
 
Hi there is a tanning studio near me and they have an offer for 90mins £25.00 it is always busy she is doing really well.as for the unlimited use she does it now and again but hasnt done one for ages she juststicks to the 90 mins.

My local salon got rid of theirs recently of theirs as it wasn't making money. In fact it was having a negative effect on the salon. The reason for this it is that these units can be quiet big and take up a lot of room, in this case it made the salon feel really cluttered and cramped. The reason they were not making money from this probably has something to do with the fact that there is already alot of competition on the area (especially from specialist tanning shops).

Is there competition in the area? Bear in mind that if there is none it could show that there is no market in that are, but if there are loads then the market could already be saturated. A bit of market research always comes in handy perhaps you should speak to your regular clients. What do they think, would they use this service?

£12 unlimited sound exceptionally cheap. Now this may get you loads of customers in the short-term, but when you consider how much will be spead on bulbs and electricity is it viable as a long-term option. If you later hike up your prices to a more realistic level then you the customer base you have built up. Would probably be better to go for a higher standard price and take a little longer building a quality customer base. If you want to promote the beds then a limited promotions such as "% off first session" or "after 5 sessions get your 6th free" may be better.
